Maybe start doing daily oil checks on her vehicles? Just saying.

May theCreator bless all the women in my life who treat their mechanical stuff with love and respect. I like to think they appreciate the work of keeping old fleet seaworthy and their car payments at $0

Forgot to add
Pros / cons? I've done a lot of things with transferable skills (40+ years of automotive work, and 30 of that on mostly Volvos--heads, clutches, brakes, suspension, etc.-- and have used an engine hoist to lift, move, and precisely place 1000+ lb. objects in construction, etc.) but have never actually removed and replaced an engine. It would be a first, but I'm pretty sure I can do it as I'm methodical and careful and organized. I've read through the Haynes manual and the procedure seems doable. Please talk me into / out of doing it myself.
You would be more than fine with an engine pull. Skill set way over the top

I my mind an engine swap is simpler than an engine rebuild.

I completely agree, engine swap is much easier than opening up the engine like for bottom end or head work.

Engine swap job, keys:
- be safe moving around very heavy things
- be organized (super helpful!)
- have enough space to do the job safely and organized

That's the same price I paid for my 2007 XC70 with 119k miles four years ago. It was serviced at a Volvo dealership but timing belt and PCV jobs weren't done yet,

Right after I got her I spent a good amount and time on the PCV cleanup, timing & serpentine belts, water pump, front crankshaft seal, dropping the oil pan, all new exhaust minus the headers, and all new ATE calipers, discs, pads, & rear parking shoes.

Well...she may be tough on cars, but she's good to me, and gave me two wonderful daughters. For that alone she can kill a car every couple of years if she wants to! :D

Thank you all again for the comments and encouragement. You all really helped with the decision process, and we were beyond lucky to have found that 2007! She brought it home last night, It's dark red and...it's gorgeous. Going to have to park the two wagons side by side and snap some pictures (the other one is light green) as they make a lovely pair.

Been prowling ebay for engines, seeing them in the $2k - 2.5k range. Also bookmarked the place in Spokane mentioned earlier. Any other suggestions for engine sources? Very relieved not to have to do this swap under deadline pressure, so I have a little time to be selective.
