S/v70 glovebox stuck closed , 1998 1999 2000

Post by abscate »

Evita has a stuck glove box, it turns out the database n this is mostly/all 850 based

The glovebox on the 70 series is different.

Same options apply…

Destroy
Drill
Saw off loop

…and a couple more. It turns out the 70 series lives behind the trim cover on the rear of the glovebox latch, rear relative to car as always.

More to come

Picture bank…it looks like I can slip a thin blade in 65 mm starboard side of the key hole and release the lock that way

So you have taken another glove box apart to figure out what is going on? So no luck with using a screw driver on the latch rocker under the handle first?

I just disassembled a spare yesterday and found the same LH hinge pin locator broken that Robert shows in his video. This means the LG end of the handle does not give downward pressure on the latch rocker which is at the LH end. Use of a curved tool like Robert uses (a trim remover) or even a wide flat screwdriver should be able to do the same.

I know in Robert's video he also shows a secondary failure of the slider mechanism.

That’s why I run four 1999s. It’s great to have a clinical trial before surgery.

I totally understand you on this. Don't want to irreparable damage to rare to find parts . Shame you have those nice wooden inserts on your glove boxes. Otherwise worst case you could probably break the insert off and then access the mechanism to open the door and then replace the broken cover. It may even be repairable but they do have fairly hefty plastic mounts!

Abby has the same wood on her glovebox lid, in perfect shape. I can’t bring ,y self to drill it.

One cool thing on the v70 series. If you leave the three screws off and just Velcro the trim in, you can address the next stuck box easily

Two knife trick worked like a charm. One knife eases the fancy wood trim up at bottom , 3mm

The other goes in 60 mm to right of key hole and slides the release over

It popped right open

Root cause. The slide isn’t going far enough to right to release the pawl. Not sure what is worn or has gone out of tolerance yet.

The wood trim piece is in by friction so I can easily access the lock and pop it open

Here’s the action on the 1998 99 00

Lifting handle 1, pivots and moves the lever in the front ( hidden, 2) , which then pushes the release (3), freeing the spring cam (4) , releasing it from the wire latch lock.

On mine, even hand pressure to right on 3 is not releasing the cam(4) so something has moved or worn , probably in the front part.

Root cause

A piece of plastic from the trim mount had broken and fallen neatly into the front shuttle latch, blocking full throw. This stopped the latch clevis from releasing.

All well

Left off the trim t25 as prophylaxis for future problems

7500 mile oil, nice
