Front quick struts

Post by Mr. Detail »

Heh, guys, and Happy Father's Day!
Can anyone recommend a so-called "quick strut", which already comes with the spring attached for my '02 P2?
I know that Sachs is the OEM brand but they are $160 a side. I don't want to cheap it out but just wondering
if anyone has saved a little and found a comparable strut.

IPD Sachs loaded quick struts are on sale for $259. I just installed a set on my XC70.

I installed Sachs Quick Struts in 2019, so far so good 25K miles later.

Some people here had issues with it: I think it was @abscate.

PS: Whatever you do, don't touch the Quick Struts with no names sold on ebay or local auto parts store.
These struts are made in China. You can count on them failing after 10K-20K etc.

I had two fail due to spring explosion on a 1998 v70 documented here. I would guess these were samplefailures ,not brand condemnation

The ones I bought and installed this week were assembled with (quote from IPD site):

“Original Equipment Supplier (OES) Sachs struts, Our own IPD HD spring seats and springs,
Lemförder strut mount bearings”

On the surface, it looks like a good package for $259 ea. I’m running them now and they certainly ride like the Sachs struts I put together w/ Volvo springs and quality hardware from FCP last year on my S60. Time will tell.

For me it was worth it. My XC had cheap quick struts on it and I could/would not re-use any components. The Sachs kit unloaded and w/o springs is $500. My total for the two loaded IPD/Sachs struts was $519.90 delivered. What I did on my S60 didn’t make much sense in the end except ending up with a good OEM feel. The S60 had cheap quick struts which were still good, but I wanted to migrate it back to OEM. I bought junk yard Volvo struts that had 115k miles on the for $50 a piece thinking I could run them for a while then reload them, reusing the springs, nuts bolts and adding new bump stops, seats and mounts, etc. I put them on and found both spring seats were blown. I put my quick struts back on and ordered the new parts. I still ended up with great OEM struts in the front, sooner than I planned and still payed out around the same price as the $519 on the XC. So I eliminated a few steps this time. Hey, but I did get good at swapping out struts. Lol

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Ok, here is a follow along question. I see a lot of Sachs front struts for sale without the coil springs. My question is does anyone know the involvement or amount of time it takes a mechanic to remove my old springs and re-compress them onto a new strut? I know from talking to my regular mechanic, they don't seem to like to do this process. Not sure if ti is too dangerous for them or what. They want me to buy a quick strut which of course makes it is easier for them and more expensive $$ for me.
