Suspension or Steering?

Post by 5rivers »

Greetings all,

My '98 V70 has been whining at me when it drives over a bump or a series of bumps. Sometimes this happens when I am turning but mostly it is when the car goes over a series of bumps or a pothole that I have not managed to avoid. The whining noise is similar to a medium paced series of creaks, and occasionally the ABS and Tracks off dash lights are on. Once I hit a bump or step on the brake, the lights go off. The brake fluid is at the max level in the reservoir. Any clues to help me track down this noise would be helpful. Thanks!!

I think I’d be looking at ABS sensor, the signal ring that triggers it, or a loose brake shield. Just my first hunch.

I would have a look to suspension strut support bearing front axle and engine mounts.

+1 with Black Bart. I would be checking the reluctor rings on the front axles, and also the wiring to or the actual ABS sensors. I the ring on one side has cracked it could damage the abs sensor.

As manovlov suggests those are good areas to check out. If the noise you have does not go away after checking the abs reluctor rings and sensors/wiring, then I would also look at the support bearing on the passenger side axle. We seem to be hearing a lot of these failing recently.

Thanks all for the many suggestions.
The engine mounts are relatively new, so I have ruled those out.
The reluctor ring on the front driver side hub is in good shape - no cracks at all.
The wiring to the ABS sensor is good as well, no cracks there.

I am not sure where to look for the suspension strut support bearing - need help on this.

The noise seems to be getting louder and more frequent and especially when I step on the brake.
Sometimes the pedal initially is hard (and the noise is louder), but then is easier to push about half way to the floor (the noise eases up).
Could this be the brake booster?
There is some fluid seepage at the wiring connection to the master cylinder.
ABS and tracks off dash lights are on almost all the time.
