Oil smoke in left turns -95 850 T-5R

Post by Turbojeppe »

As the title says, my 850 lets off a huge cloud of blue-ish smoke in left turns. Not all turns but consistent enough to happen at least once every drive. I'm pretty sure it comes out from under the car since it has the whirlwind effect when I see it in the rear view mirror.

Anyone has had any similar issue? To my knowledge it would be oil that gets on something hot but it isn't clean enough for me to see a concrete smudge and go "hey that oil leak is new" lol. Trying my best here and I understand that old seals and gaskets gets bad with age and heat cycles. I just don't wanna go here and be "what's this issue" and "what's that issue". I always want to learn and understand why something in, and around these engines happen.

The incredible GEE forces produced by your RRRR slosh the oil in the pan so that it's a vertical sheet on one side of the engine, then finding it's way out in the least convenient places!

This concludes the useless BB advice post.

I'm not qualified....

BUT...what is involved if the oil surges to the right wheel / front of the engine? It's pouring off to the top of the valve cover onto the exhaust? Oil filler cap gasket?

Something with the lower front cover or pan gasket seal? Front crank seal?

External? - oil line to the turbo? What's on the back or front of the engine with enough oil in it to surge out...?

Oil cooler - does it have the one on the back of the pan?

850 does not have the oil cooler on the back of the engine. If it has one (most turbos do) then it has an oil thermostat under the crank pulley on the RHS of the engine bay.

If there is no external signs of oil leaks around the engine bay or transmission then it must be happening internal to the engine workings.

Does a 96 850 have the pre-heat pump under the battery tray and the valve on the exhaust flange?

If it does and the pump is seized and the valve is leaking as they do, it could be fluid being pushed up the pipe and out the valve into the exhaust which would only happen on left turns.

An internal oil leak in the turbo may give some oil pooling in the turbo outlet area that gets pushed out doing LH turns.

Otherwise, maybe oil leaking at the oil filler cap dripping down the back of the engine onto the exhaust manifold.

Otherwise can't think of any other things that would cause this.

Alright I checked the engine and it was a bit golden at the very edge of the engine, top right from driver position. I used my phone and saw oil most definitively from the camshaft cover. And silicone? According to some google answers, the cover doesnt use a gasket?

It doesnt really seem easy for a grassroot wrencher as myself to remove the camshaft cover if I have to use special tools and special glue. I have removed a camshaft cover before, about 10 years ago on a bad engine, and I remember cracking off a piece of it by the camshaft wheel. Is it doable with more experience and common tools? The camshafts will probably jump out of place unless I TDC everything and remove the belt?

Thanks

Gonna edit; I have already a new oil cap gasket and I have driven with a bad inner boot for the long axle which have plunged all the grease in that area. Thanks for showing me the right direction to look!
