Handbrake cable (9485386) retaining clip

Post by foggydogg »

When I did the cables on the Reluctant R, both retaining clips were held fast by the muck of ages. No amount of the magic juice of the day changed that - only brute force prevailed. I remember Neil saying the clips were NLA from Mother, and a brief search on volvopartswebstore showed the piece, but no part number. It didn't prevent reassembly, it was just something that needed addressed. Dr. Abscate told me he just uses zip ties, which is a good idea, but I wanted to take a stab at doing the Right Thing.
Somewhere deep in the memory bank, from back in my pro mechanic days, I knew I had seen that clip before.
I was on LMC Trucks website looking for a small bit for the old square body, and trollled around in the Ford section on a hunch.

L: Shiny new LMC......C: bent, folded and mutilated .......R: Ditto, and also broke
(The LMC part number doesn't translate into Ford speak; Dennis Carpenter says 8M-2814, which does.)

Some Ford cars and trucks, '49-72. $2.50 the pair.
Others have them, and one of the Ford forums claims another part number is used, but the LMC page shows that to be a wider clip. I think this application is actually for the brake hose bulkhead clip, as opposed to the cable.

I took a pic of the product installed, but the computer ate it and erased the image from the sd card. I'll add it when I take the car apart - again - to install the center bearing support belly plate.

55-65 Chevy's of some sort used a similar part that is reproduced by a company in Florida. I contacted them to see if they would consider making Volvo ones from new samples I could supply. Never got any reply.

Also told of 95-05 era Dodge trucks that used a similar clip as well.

Unfortunately that is all I can give in terms of details as I can't recall the name of the company in Florida. I may still have the part somewhere. I'll see if I can find it and update if I do.

Nice!! I had a project to seek these out. I wonder how close the M56 shift cable clips come to these?

I got a surprise shipment from the obscure Volvo parts of Calgary Mental Facility for FathersDay..l

Neil, to my eye, these appear identical to the ones I wrestled out of the backing plate boss. I never found a real Ford part number for them. At $1.25 each it's one of the least spendy thing I've ever done to one of these cars.

LMC:
https://www.lmctruck.com/1957-72-ford/f ... components
NB: number 10 is the object of our affection, and clearly shows it as the bulkhead clip for the hoses.
number 11 is mentioned as the cable clip in one of the Ford forums, as shown.
Here as well, but it seems to be like the item I got from LMC

Ditto
https://shoebox-central.com/1949-1950-1 ... cable-clip
This one seems to be zinc- or cad-plated ?

I haven't done cables on a fwd car yet, so can't speak of that application.
And of course, beware the dreaded chassis break ( nudge-nudge, a bone for abscate.)
