2001 V70 Radiator fan not working

Post by Shane40 »

Hi everyone, wonder if anyone can help? I’ve replaced the coolant radiator and condenser pack but the fan is not kicking in! Thought it might be the fan I bought so I plugged the old fan back in whilst the car was running and the old fan worked straight away so put the old one back on now it won’t work!! Could I have blow the relay? The temp gauge stays at half way!
I’ve tried all connections and thought it might be an air lock so partly drained the system but still no luck!
Did notice there does not seem to be much pressure in the expansion tank!

Any thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks Shane

Hi,

I can tell you a little about this that might help but others here may have more info, and the info i present here is based on a 1998 v70.

First, the fan has a fuse that is rated at 60 amps. If the fuse is pulled or blown, the fan never runs. Yes the relay will come into question too if you could replace it that would of course show if it was that or not. You could try taking the relay out and energizing the coil and see if the contacts close, but sometimes the contacts will go bad so you'd need to do a better test with a power source and load on the contacts. If the simpler test fails however, then you know it's the relay, maybe an open coil wire.

Second, the sensor on the front of my engine near where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine controls the fan on/off operation through the computer. If that sensor is bad, it can cause the fan to either run or not run. On mine it caused the fan to keep running after the engine was turned off, even though it did not need to run. It was bad, and replacing that sensor cured the problem where the fan would run for about 2 minutes after the engine was shut off. It also caused hard starting because i think the fuel/air mixture was not right due to the computer measuring the wrong temperature of the engine.

So that reflects what my experience was maybe it will help you a little.

Good luck with it.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Hi again, had mechanic look at it today and he thought that it was a air lock in the system so drained all the fluid again and filled the system up again and run it with the expansion tank cap off and the heaters in the car on hot as he suggested but still the fan does not work! The mechanic checked the relay and all connections!
The temp gauge stays at half way! Not too sure what to do next any help would be appreciated
Thanks shane

Is the car hot enough to turn on? The fan doesn't run all the time. It can take quite a bit of idling before mine will turn on, unless I have the AC on.

Just to clarify what car we are talking about. In North America a 2001 V70 is a P2 chassis first year (2001-2007). Up to 2000 is a P80 V/S/C70/850

If it is a P2 we are in the wrong forum to possibly get the answers you are looking for.

Hi,

I should have asked, are you getting a check engine light or any pending trouble codes?
