Are you reusing your old rotors? I would mill them so I know they are straight n nice without a wear lip.
When mounting pads use special anti squeek paste on proper parts/places. Look on youtubes where to lube that sucker.

I will likely use the current rotors, unless I see something wrong with them. I don't usually bother getting rotors turned. If they're bad enough, I will just replace them. I do have, and plan on using brake grease. I have a couple to choose from. I was going to get the ATE stuff, but forgot to add it to my order. I've got AGS Sil-Glyde, and CRC Caliper Grease. I've also got Permatex dielectric which is clear silicone and may also be suitable.

Still waiting on my new pads. They're supposed to be here today, but looking at the tracking they're not even in state yet.

"Out for delivery" today, but it rained this morning, and there's a chance of thunderstorms, so I may be doing other things.
I might go look at a 2002 S60 with no oil pressure, but "runs and drives nice". Mostly while I'm at the auction house looking at other things.

The Akebono pads have the attached shims too. It'll be interesting to see what's on the car now, once I get it apart. It's strange that the squeaking is not consistent.

There is a heavy chamfer on the Volvo pads that keeps them quiet. The material is softer , too but wears well…50-60k on my front brakes.

They are also really dirty on the wheels unless they have changed their technology in the last 4-5 years. I stopped using them because of that. I had squealing issues with the 93 850 we had and that was even with Volvo pads. I took them apart, cleaned everything and fitted new rotors and pads and it went away. Some of the squealing can be caused by drivers riding the brakes which 'glazes' the rotors and that will make them squeal. In the 'old' days we used to skim the rotors to remove the glaze, then lightly sand the face of the pads to roughen them and service was returned to normal.
Materials for both rotors and pads has changed over the last 10-15 years with newer more friendly materials for the user and planet. Some of the early attempts were not so successful.
I have had Akebono pads on 2 Volvos now (P2 and P80) and the have been fine. My son finds no difference to the Volvo pads other than cleaner wheels, and even with lack of use and lots of standing about the V70R P80 has had no real issues. My original complaint was it took a little use daily to'warm' the pads to get the best from them, but as I discovered last year the hidden rear of the front rotors were really pitted so only about half the surface area was effective on the side.Swapping in new Zimmerman rotors and Akebono pads has improved this issue and as the car is now garaged over the winter cold weather effects on the pads is no longer an issue.
Many have had little issue with pads and rotors these days on the P80's as I don't hear of the issue too much any more. Maybe there are still some brands where mixing of suppliers may cause an issue, but I believe more of the issues are lack of maintenance, sticking calipers and pitted and un-lubed slider pins and pad backs.
Volvo did/do? sell anti-squeal shims but I have not needed them in 15 years of P80 driving.
Neil.

Whatever I have on there now is dusty.
The thin stainless pieces? I have those on the rear brakes, but they're shaped weird. Sort of like an "L". I think it was on IPD that I saw there are two different shapes for the 850, and the L shape makes no sense to me.Volvo did/do? sell anti-squeal shims but I have not needed them in 15 years of P80 driving.

Strange thing is that I don't recall having brake issues in terms of squealing on my V70's (98-00) only on my early 850. The 97 850 did not have any issues that I recall but that did have Volvo pads on ATE front rotors. I do recall my brother having to swap those all out due to warping of the discs.
Many years ago when still living in the UK we had bumpers stickers that said something like 'nothing squeals like my Volvo'! My 240's used to be bad for that if you did not fit the anti-squeal shims. Nowadays, the shim is built into the backs of many of the pads.
