Could really use some tips or advice as this issue is driving me nuts. 2000 v70 n/a auto, I’ll start with the symptoms. First start of the day, car always fires right up, no hard starting or anything like that. If I try to drive off after startup without letting it idle for a few, it refuses to go anywhere. Pedal to the floor, I could outrun it on foot, it pretty much just idles forward then eventually picks up a little steam. Creep around the block a few times and the problem goes away, car will run flawlessly until it sits overnight, then it’ll do it again. No codes, timing is fine, no smells, nothing leaking, no weird sounds, not so much as a hint that something is wrong other than that one symptom.
What I’ve done so far. New fuel filter, new coolant temp sensor, new plugs, new fuel pump relay, new camshaft position sensor, cleaned throttle body, new o2s, new cam reset valve, fresh oil change. I’ve checked to see if the cat was clogged, looked for vacuum leaks, tested for head gasket leak, double checked timing, all came up empty. If it did it all the time, it’d make more sense, to me anyway. But it has to sit overnight for the problem to appear. Someone mentioned the fuel pump maybe allowing pressure to bleed off overnight, but the car starts almost immediately, even after it’s sat for a week or two, never so much as a hesitation to fire up.
At this point I’m lost, I was hoping it would join the half million mile club with my 240, but I can’t for the life of me figure this out. Anyone dealt with something similar or have any advice at all? It’s been such a good car to me until now so I’d feel bad not putting in the effort to diagnose it and try to keep it going.
Could really use some help troubleshooting a phantom issue on my 2000 v70

The very low power which suddenly clears sounds a lot like you have a problem in the throttle body.
Your 2000 is the second year of the electronic throttle body/module/ system. (Abbreviated ETM ETB ETS here)
It’s the small 10cm cube attached to the intake manifold and the fat rubber snorkel
If its a “ white label “ it’s probably original and has reached its end of life.
There is an entire sub forum on replacement options.

Something is NOT telling to ecu that gas pedal is pressed down and throttle is moving.
I would check TPS sensor & ETM(mainly their connectors).
On '99 & '00 TPS should be integrated into gas pedal if i recall correctly.

This one has been rebuilt previously, it has the sacer contactless tps installed. Would an etm related issue only be preset once a day when the car is cold? I can’t get it to replicate any other time, and it only lasts for maybe a minute or two.abscate wrote: ↑22 Jul 2022, 02:14 The very low power which suddenly clears sounds a lot like you have a problem in the throttle body.

I don’t know enough about the failure modes to give guidance in the cold/ hot behaviour
The definitive test would be to watch the reported throttle positions of the two sensors in VIDA
If there is more than a slight mismatch, the software gives up and puts you into limp mode…. Low power , about 2000 rom max, and 15 mph home
Does that fit the cold running profile?

Let us know where in the USA you are located. Maybe someone with a VIDA laptop lives nearby and could help you monitor the sensors to determine if the ETM is to blame.

Transmissions by Aisin. One of the most reliable transmissions made.

99 cars had the same transmissions as 98, 4-speed auto or 5 speed manual. 00 year got the 5-speed auto in base models and 'R' as far as I recall. I have had 2 x 00 and so far so good with 170k and 200k on them. Servicing was more critical on the 5 speed but that was the tie when Volvo told everyone they were 'sealed for life' items which they now recommend 50,000 mile flush on?!

I’m in northern Virginia, I’ve considered picking up one of the knock offs myself but wasn’t sure if it was worth the hassle.
It only does it if I attempt to drive immediately after starting though, and only for a minute or two. Doesn’t require a restart or anything to correct, it just gradually improves as I keep driving. Mine went into limp mode over a previous issue and this doesn’t feel the same, just feels like you’re in a manual and trying to pull off from a stop sign in 4th gear or something.abscate wrote: ↑22 Jul 2022, 02:42 I don’t know enough about the failure modes to give guidance in the cold/ hot behaviour
