I spent an evening in 1987 cruising around with my friend in his family's Fiero (I-4 not the much more rare V6). Then again in 1989 with a guy on my college dorm who had one. Kinda fast for the era... more fun than fast. Just fun to be in one driving around, that type of fun.

Of course GM killed it. Anything right they put a stop to, and anything wrong they green-lit with gusto.

My best friend in high school had a Fiero with the 2.5l 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual trans. The positive battery cable ended up against the exhaust, somehow, and burnt through the insulation causing a dead short which blew the battery apart. That's the loudest thing I've ever heard, and the scariest, since the battery sat in the engine bay right behind the passenger seat.

They were sold by AMC here. I wanted an 80s turbo hatchback back when I had my 323 sedan, and I was trying to find a hatchback version. I found other turbo hatchback models, like the Fuego, but I really wanted the 323 GTX rally based Mazda hatchback.

Fiery was a fake sports car that could have been so much more, just as Matt mentioned.
