I followed what this video said, and it fixed the gauges and clock running problem. In addition, I also did the other ICs, but I advise that you do not touch the one closest to the digital display that says EPSON, as the pins are tiny, and my display now has portions of some letters missing.

OK, now I need some help -

My wife ran some errands and the key fob is not locking or unlocking the car. Key worked fine in the door.
She says the cluster display is completely blank - no speedo or tach, no gauges, no messages, nothing.

However, the CEL is on (why does that light still work?)

The turn signals don't work.

I went out just now to have a look, and it's just as described above. I started and drove around the block and it felt like it was starting in 2nd gear. This may be related or unrelated, but it's new today. It just just didn't feel right pulling away - too many revs for the speed.

So are these symptoms of this DIM board solder failure?

Question about the tool - should I be looking for a high quality solder gun with a really fine tip? My ancient clunk is probably not the tool. What sorts of places supply these? How hot should it be able to get?

Do this under a magnifying lens lamp so you can see it melt? How do you know when to stop?

I'm leaving for a week - she'll have to drive the Audi and we'll leave this parked.

How Much Watts for this job, kids?

American made. Heard of these?

A narrow iron vs a gun? Low temp to not ruin things? High temp to melt fast?

The first one on that list is $55, which seems reasonable (?). It says 75W, then 60W iron / 15W internal motherboard. Decent reviews. Made in China. hmm.

How about this one? 60W pencil, US-made, 1150º F max temp.
They have several tip options - cones, chisels, blades.

In the very good video on the 1st page, someone asks about temperature in the comments. He answered about 360C. The one I just posted lists max 621C, and I don't see that it's adjustable. So this must be an important thing to know before picking one.

You want a small sharp pencil one for this type of work. A 60 watt soldering iron is massive

OK, I’m shopping tomorrow. It could be Ace Hardware, could be radio controlled hobby shop, could be European suppliers, could be Chinese junk. I’ve got to get this done.

Look for 25, 35W examples?

Ace has this one. Weller is a quality brand name. It’s a pencil tip. See if its available at your local store. It looks like a normal stocking item for them.

Good advice. I saw those online and my pea brain was thinking, Oh, it has to be at least $50 or 60 to be any good.

I’m out in the street looking it over. Only the drivers door will unlock with the key. There is no way to unlock and open the rear hatch (I’m cleaning carpets). And the rear windows will not open - from the driver door controls or the individual door controls, even when running. There was a weird idle jump after I started it. So weird. Is all this connected to the DIM?

When unlocking the car with the key physically in the door, you need to rotate/twist the key twice counter-clockwise (towards the front of the car) in order for all the other locks in the car to disengage. If you already knew this, or this has absolutely nothing to do with your question, I apologize for my lack of reading comprehension.

Your symptoms sound like possibly a bad driver's door module. I would hook up VIDA and see what's going on. Below video were the symptoms of my dead DIM that I had replaced by Xemodex

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.
