Obviously, it now has fuel in it but no pressure to the fuel rail. Not my car and not nearby to check. My buddies son's car and he now has learned why you don't run the tank below 1/4 full as the pump uses fuel to cool it.
Now, hopefully at 125,000 miles the pump has not called it quits. Assuming it is not the pump, on a P2 what else could prevent fuel getting to the rail?
1) Clogged line/fuel filter from possible debris at the bottom of the tank? I think it had a new filter fairly recently but need to check.
2) Is there a fuse on the fuel pump on a P2 that can fail if the pump overheats? Is there anything else on the same fuse that can be checked?
3) Is the a fuel relay like on the P80's that can fail?
Any input is appreciated as P2's are still fairly new to my repair knowledge!
Thanks,
Neil.

If it ran out of fuel, like you said...i think it's a game over for that fuel pump.
When it runs on dry, without fuel to flow through it...few seconds are enough.

There's a fuel pump drive module according to Rockauto... don't know what it does besides complicate things, and cost a lot of money.

Actually 1/4 tank is not bad yet.
When the orange light is on, visit a gas station ASAP.
Anyway, I always fill it up > 1/4 tank.
A possiblity is the bad PEM, if you have a spare PEM lying around, it is not a bad idea to swap it as a test.

Unfortunately no PEM as I don't have many parts for P2 models mostly P80. I looked up the price of a PEM and nearly $550 CDN!! Ouch!
I may have to do a PnP run and look at a V50/S40 gen2 for one hopefully they still have them.
There is a good (claimed) used one up north for $100 so that may be an option. Yikes! Then there is just a case of where the heck it is. All I can find is info for XC90 Gen1, and S60/V70 FWD and the 2 places they can be on those, but nothing for AWD?
If what misha says is right, then it may be the pump that is toast. If that is the case then that should be a great big warning sign on the dash to tell you never to run the car out of gas. What a crap design!
Neil.

There was a great MVS thread where we found out women never see the low fuel light, aka the Idiot Man Light.what misha says is right, then it may be the pump that is toast. The Creator shows that the second Generation of product is usually vastly improved over the first, in so many ways.
I’ve got spare PEMs down here in NY. Time to get the N.Y. to Calgary box packed !
Late P2 fuel delivery
1. Hard soldered fuel pump power relay on CEM ...doesn’t fail
2, Pump Electronic module ...interprets ECU request for fuel and generates PWM signal to fuel pump. Does corrode and fail 100-200k? Location varies, top of tank, inside car, inside trunk. There was a bulletin to move it to help with corrosion issue.
Some info here

3 Fuel pump in tank..pretty long lived but the history points here first.

All good info guys and much appreciated. Still waiting for info if any codes are thrown. However, the owner said he tried the car today (now with gas in the tank) and the fuel pump whirred for a few seconds but no pressure at the rail.
Does this point more toward the PEM or a possible blockage in the fuel filter or lines?
Would it do any damage removing the fuel line near the front of the car and blowing the line backwards?
Neil.

they have a small CO2 cartridge for pressure, no need to carry a compressor. It puts the junk back in the tank.
But it should clear the pickup sock.
I recall the PEM is located on top of the tank in sedans, or next to the spare tire in post 04 wagon.
