Hello,
My 2003 s40 has a clacking sound (sounds like a loose plastic connector hitting something solid - maybe another plastic connector), coming from the interior front cowl/instrument panel. It only occurs when I'm driving on pebbly types of roads and not on smooth roads. It definitely is from the interior of the car. I have been going crazy trying to locate the exact location of the sound, but it is intermittent and I can't take my eyes off the road while driving. I only have 62000 miles on the car which I bought new in 2003. The rattle only started a few weeks ago. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Sorry mate, haven't had the pleasure of that type of problem. Only thing that comes to mind is a speedo cable coming loose but you said it doesn't happen when on smooth surfaces. Has any work been done under the dash like stereo or radio repair or replacement that might have been left loose? Any kind of repair done on the car in that area might be some place to start your search for a cause.
Take a good look under that dash and see if there is anything left loose. You may have to take some panels down but they are not that hard to replace.
Good luck
