This is exactly the question - you need more information on what this means and what happened to it. Is it a local gas station mechanic who doesn't actually know what's wrong or doesn't want to bother? It could be a minor $500 thing if you could manage that, and keep it.

There are some pretty stupid prices for old Volvo's. But the market will always accommodate the most fooling buyer.
I mean, those are nice cars. But these 240's are at the point of being dinosaurs. Parts are getting quite hard to get, and even a lot of the independent shops are starting to shun them.
