2006 S60 2.5T AWD fuel filling question

Post by scot850 »

My buddies son has just had the fuel pump replaced on his car following running it dry and then it would not pump fuel.

Volvo dealer said the pump was clogged. He was also having low fuel pressure check engine lights prior to this.

He just texted me to say he has just filled the tank (he did not try to overfill it after the pump clicked) and then he noticed fuel dripping from under the rear of the car.

Not having a P2 handbook or car to hand to check, does anyone know if the car will overflow when filled? I thought with all the emissions gubbins on the cars these days that should not happen?

Also meant to ask if the P2 AWD or FWD pumps have a sock on them like the P80's have to stock crap getting into the pump.

Appreciate any wisdom on this. I did tell him to call the dealer and ask them as I could not be sure on this issue.

Thanks.

Neil.

My car overfills. If I'm at Costco (high velocity pumps) and leave the pump in until it clicks itself off, it ends up leaking out of the filler hole, and out of the vent. I was told that it was possibly a clogged vent canister, I took it out and blew it out with compressed air. It didn't fix the issue. Now I estimate how much gas I need to put in, let the nozzle sit slightly outside of the hole, and throttle it back once it starts reaching that amount. It's a pain in the ass. It is not normal behaviour, as my wife's XC does not do this.

It goes without saying : If I was him I would bring it back to the dealer if it happened after their work though. If I recall the threads you put here he ended up paying an exorbitant amount of money for that fuel pump replacement?

As far as I now his parents did! I am not sure what the final bill was as it was an estimate assuming the pump was bad, so as yet I don't know what was actually done.

Thanks for the info though. Funny thing is we had a 06 XC70 that is now our sons, but I can't recall ever filling it. It was my wife's car. I'm sure I must have but it must have been about 8 years ago!

Had that happen, I fixed it by lubricating the sealing ring on the pump and screwing it back tighter.

I haven't heard back so assuming it is sorted. I'll check and post back if I get a response.

I have heard of the seal rings on the P2 pumps being a bit of a challenge if you don't get them 100% clean on all mating surfaces and lube the seal with something like vaseline to make sure it doesn't bind when tightening.

Thanks for the help!

This is my habit for the last 20 years: under-fill it by 1-2 gallons.

Overfilling can damage EVAP system.
The only thing that prevents over-fill is the auto-off device in the gas pump handle. If that thing fails, you will have a lot of gas spilling out of the filler neck!

So, this is what I do in the last 20 yrs, knowing that most sedans' fuel tank is about 18G.
- Let's say you are at 1/4 mark or about 4-5G remaining.
- To get to FULL, you need another ~ 13G.
- I usually pump with 12G, then stop, my fuel gauge will be at 95% full, good enough for me.
Avoid potential damage to EVAP system.

The Y chromosome has a gene thst Carries two well known cognitive defects

‘ let’s see how much gas I can cram into this tank so I can delay my next fuel stop “

Based on my visits to the fuel station, it is not the Y chromosome that is the main offender of the overfilling. I do see both overfilling and I put that down to ignorance of not knowing the damage it can do in modern cars, and not reading the owners manual.

Guilty of both overfilling and driving with the light on. I like living on the edge. That’s why I use ProParts and Uro too!
