Hello, love our xc90! But I’m suspecting transmission work is impending.
Symptoms: Ocassional notchy shifts, hangs momentarily between shifts, often shifts down to a lower gear than normal between 3rd and 4th gear and 5th don to 4th.
All gears shift up and down whether hot or cold.
Mileage is 180,000.
Questions:
1 Will a valve body sort this out? If so how long for?
2 Would a full dump and refil help? Previous owner had transmission fluid dropped and refilled, invoice says only 3 litres supplied so I’m not convinced it was a proper job.
I’d rather change the valve body than waste money on fluids as the mileage is quite high.
It ran better for a couple of days after the adaptives were reset.
There’s a lot to read on the web but not much for higher mileage Xc’s. The v70 went 240,000 miles on the original box and seemed much better than the 6speeds.
Thanks in advance
Matt

If the fluid is original you may have a bigger problem after changing to fresh oil as you wash away the metallics that kept it thick and running.
You can attempt a drain and fill until you have clear fluid, reset adaptation through vida.
Drain -> fill start car cycle through gears P,R,N,1,2,3 repeat. Keep in mind you also want to do a short drive to purge gears 4,5

Hi peeps. on this very subject can anyone tell me how long an aw 55-50sn, 5 speed auto box will go on with the gears harsh & dropping into 3rd or 4th? I have a long trip 1500miles, or there abouts, & can't find a replacement car in time so I need to take my XC90, which I think is maybe the best car I've had. Is it possible I to do without terminating the? Thanks Gerry.
New valve body sort it with a probability of 80%. But before it I'll suggest to make partial change of fluid. And in parallel install transmission oil filter. I used filter adapter(sorry don't know right name of it) from Subaru. Part number: Subaru 38365-AA000(I suppose it possibly to find on junkyard), filter part number: Subaru 38325-AA032 (but I use cheaper analogue Sakura) . After several changes when fluid became cleaner you can install new valve bodyFree2drive! wrote: ↑11 Jul 2022, 04:25 Hello, love our xc90! But I’m suspecting transmission work is impending.

If you are interested in filter installation just give me a shout. I'll attach some photos with it
Sorry, It's not clear for me. Probably because of my English is weak. Could you describe your symptomsGerryH wrote: ↑15 Aug 2022, 09:14 Hi peeps. on this very subject can anyone tell me how long an aw 55-50sn, 5 speed auto box will go on with the gears harsh & dropping into 3rd or 4th? Have you tried doing some drain/fills first? I've heard that the AW 55-50sn has issues with the valve body/solenoids...mine last for 260,000 miles before having issues with 3rd gear. Make sure your fluid level is correct and make sure your using the specified ATF. It sounds like your A/T can be saved...you probably have issues with the SLT/SLS/SLU solenoids and valve body.GerryH wrote: ↑15 Aug 2022, 09:14 Hi peeps. on this very subject can anyone tell me how long an aw 55-50sn, 5 speed auto box will go on with the gears harsh & dropping into 3rd or 4th?
