Mann W917 oil filter on 99 ( non turbo)

My two NA 1999 use metal spin on filters. Theis is a Mann 917 after 12 months in rust belt , one winter.

Top rust is a bit nasty, I’m a bit sensitized to it because when I first started Evita the can let go and Exxon Valdezed my driveway

Sticking to 12 months or less for filter changes in the rust belt is probably prudent

I suppose you could do pre installation painting of the filter to slow the rust. While protecting the seal area, of course.

That's weird. I'd guess it's the position of the filter, right up front and straight up and down, so it has plenty of opportunity to catch water and salt, and then holds onto it. My other vehicles have the filters further back and/or tilted, so they don't allow for anything to sit on top.

If only the P80's came with under trays under the engine like we had in Europe. Kept the engine bays a lot cleaner and less of this type of issue. I wonder if they never came to North America due to engine heat issues as they would reduce air flow around the engine in hot areas. At least it would have been nice to have the option...........!

P80's did not have engine trays but all 240's did? Strange.

Changed title to ease anxiety. It is is used on both white block and red block Volvos so it isn’t going anywhere.

I'd just brush a thin layer of marine grade anti-seize on the bare metal area.
