How bad are my sway bar bushings?

Post by FireFox31 »

Based on the attached pictures, how bad are my sway bar bushings? This is on a 2000 V70 with 228k miles. I don't feel or hear any noise from them. Just just look cracked. I don't want poly bushings since lubricating them seems like a pain, so I'm considering replacing the entire bar.

Is it recommended to replace a rusty sway bar? The black coating has failed in a few spots.

Can a 2000 V70 accept any variation of sway bar? The sway bar I need (9173983 "marked 2") is not available, but 9173982 "marked 1" is available. Are they only different because their diameter?

Yes is the answer. The only difference is the diameter. I once posted the part numbers and codes a long time back. If I recall the V70XC was the thickest at around 21.5mm if I remember correctly.

If you are not hearing any groaning from the sway-bar or clunking they I would leave it alone. Sure it is getting ugly but as you know the bushes are vulcanised onto the sway-bar, once they let go you will know it!

You could preserve the bar itself for now with some POR-15 or similar and a wire brush!
