98 S70 Armrest hinge

Post by patcal »

My console armrest hinge is screwed up. As you can see for the pictures, the plastic is partially broken. I could not find anything that showed me what the hinge actually looks like or how it attaches to the console. Any ideas? I am thinking I am going to have to replace the console. TIA.

Strangely I just replaced a center console on my friends 98 V70 for the same issue. You have to remove the whole center console and access everything from inside it. It is easiest to remove the middle section which includes the OBD2 connector and then you can get into the T25 screws for the hinge. I did plan to try and find a fix but it was worse than yours, but it is at a point there there is no easy way to repair it other than 2 part plastic epoxy. I had thought about that but like I say the one I was working with was much more broken than that, including the actual hinge itself.

For 10 minutes and $5-10 at junkyard, I swapped it over and took the opportunity to replace the outlet bulbs while in there.

I should add, even if a replacement one does not have your nice wood inserts those can be swapped over easily enough. Maybe 8-10 more T25 screws.

I am thinking that is the way to go. I've had the console off before. It's really easy. Do you know if the P80, V70 consoles are the same as the sedans? I know on P2's they are different. pick & pull near me has 3 P80 v70's. My wood inserts are already toast. Thanks.

Yes sedans and wagons are the same 98-00. Hey, maybe you will get a nicer one! :D

I know you have done it before, but if the key is still with the car, put the trans leaver into Neutral, it makes access to the screws for ashtray easier to get into, and removing the ashtray unit. That in turn makes it easier to get the 2 screws under the coin tray. Best is it makes lifting the console out much easier.

This has worked great for many repairs. Can use a piece of paper along the break and it makes for an even stronger repair.

That console is fairly smooth and flat so you could just clean it up and for a few dollars get some wrap and watch a few Youtube videos. May have to spend a lot of time sourcing a console with the wood inserts. With the wrap you can choose whatever suits you.

I went ahead and removed all the wood grain in my Son's GS430 with a Volvo bone tool and just left it stock. Took a long time as it was difficult around the vents and stereo beside the door card areas. Both FCP and IPD have the bone tool.

It was my first try at the wrap. If you look close lots of imperfections especially around corners. Wear gloves and use a heat gun. Didn't do so for many of the parts but figure it out after having difficulties.
