SC-816 won't accept code?

Post by scot850 »

It will teach me to be smug about finding an SC-816 with a mint front plate and buttons, as well as being a factory refurbished unit.

Called my local dealer and they gave me the code for the car Vin# and it would not take it so I checked again and this time they used the head unit Serial number. Tried that and same result just went back to 'CODE'.

Did some reading and one suggestion was a possible sticking button. So I took the front off as I had suspicions that the #1 button felt a little different and less positive to the rest. Removed the face plate to check the buttons directly on the circuit board. All seem to have a positive click action.

Re-assembled and re-fitted to the car and tried again. The 4 digits came up as entered and it then went to 'OFF'. Yes the dreaded 'OFF'.
I may try the long process of recovery but not sure it is worth the effort if it does not seem to take or recognise the code from it's serial number. Maybe one more try.............?

Much as it is a mint looking unit maybe it is just a dud?? It may be out of return time at the junkyard, so I may just pull the face plate and buttons so they can be transferred to another unit if needed.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and the SC-900 that was in the car has now decided to not take any disk other than #3 and then not eject it! Again, I said only yesterday the SC-900 is no worse than the SC-901........................!! Me and my big mouth!

Then to cap it all the Volvo amp that came with my SC-901 and cable haul last week is also a dud. On opening it it looks like it may have had something spilled in it. Ho, hum.

Read the dump EEPROM by the programmer. The code must be on the first line. The number of attempts, ibid.

Thanks Nikolaech. I have no idea how to do the EEPROM check you are talking about but thanks anyway.

That SC-901 I'm looking for parts for the CD-changer flap, is now in the 'R' until I can face removing it again and retry the now cleaned SC-900 laser and rubber drive rollers that were not as clean as I'd expect considering the little use the car has. Yet again it breaks in unusual ways. I think the repair shop may have done something to the code so the code Volvo has may be incorrect. I will clear the Error OFF and try again.

If no luck then I need to decide if I will return it or take the front plate off and good buttons and keep them in case someone wants a clean front for theirs. At $14 CDN it is a coin toss. I may just return it as I have some other stuff that has to go back too.

Unfortunately, you can't recognize the changed code using available means. It will also allow you to partially diagnose the car radio. The reason may be quite different. In competent and good services, it is not customary to change the manufacturer's code. Of course, there are exceptions.

I have a SC 930 (Japan) I solved the problem of CD by installing a CD changer for 6 discs. In the future I will install "GROM" For me, more than enough.

I hear you and the Volvo challenges! Appreciate your input though, and like you say, what techs should or shouldn't do is correct, but then Canadian Immigration also had rules that they didn't follow when we came here losing our paperwork for 4 years!
