In the 70s the French inventor Jean Pain came up with a composting system that will produce hot water for about 18 months before it needed to be recharged. It "waste" product is Humus . I recall in this town in the 1980's, many newer homes had small solar panels on their roof. They were maybe 20 to 30 Square Feet. I understand they were for hot water (DHW) only. I never had one or knew much about them. I think they have all been removed.

I have read of central heating systems for towns used in Europe. The bottom of the heat cycle from a power plant is great for building heating. The drawback is the cost of all the piping.

Because they where built by fly by night companies out of Copper pipe and Aluminum flashing which are dissimilar metals ... Galvanic Corrosion killed them in about 20 years time. If you should built one, avoid that fate.

Anything that involves moving earth or trenching is expensive. That one of the reasons Geothermal did not catch on.
