03 XC70 WHEEL PLAY in the upper of the two strut bolts (that attach to knuckle)

Post by jhagen603 »

New member here. For context: picked up a solid 03 for a great deal last year and have done a lot of work to it so far. Most recently was new tires (falken wildpeaks) control arms, end links, ball joints and tie rods. Chasing some vibrations and have greatly improved the ride. Did my homework on which parts to buy. I’ve also recently replaced all engine mounts and did the subframe inserts. But I digress…

After the recent suspension work I did a test ride and some vibes still present under acceleration. My next thought was struts, hubs and/or cv axles. However I decided to grab the wheels and give a tug just to see if there’s any play. There’s a LOT of play. Drivers side mostly, but passenger side has some play too. I narrowed it down to the upper of the two strut bolts/nuts that attach to the knuckle. All the play is isolated to the bolt moving back and forth under load. And it’s tight as hell.

Any chance someone’s come across this before? Could the bolt hole in the strut have become larger due to wear? 140k mi on the car now and they look original. Or the bolt hole in the aluminum knuckle could be the culprit? Any help is appreciated!

Those bolts (and nuts?) are supposed to be replaced any time they are removed because they are torque to yield which stretches the bolt, similar to the axle bolts. Is it possible the previous owner or yourself over torqued and reused stretched old bolts? They can snap right off. Ask me how I know...

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

if its the bolts I'm thinking about, the upper one is the camber adjust bolt,

the nut goes toward the rear of the car, 3 ugga duggas or breaker bar to cinch it up.
The top bolt has a cam to make alignment adjustment.
