2001 V70 evap valve stuck open?

2001 V70 T5. Complains of a 'large leak'. Got my new smoke machine today .

Much better than the MacGrubered one I built from a spaghetti sauce jar and a soldering iron... And far less likely to explode. And it has a flow meter so you can get an idea of just how large your leak is. A WAY FUN new toy!

Smoke is coming out of the evap filter that is hanging around the top of the fuel filler pipe. At first I thought it was that part that was failing. But I don't think so.

The filter connects to a hose, that connects to the evap shutoff valve. NOT the 'evap purge valve' that's at the radiator.

My thinking is that with the car off, that valve should not be open and smoke should not be billowing out that filter. Which leads me to think the evap shutoff valve (ex: https://www.ipdusa.com/products/7151/EV ... 016-114238 ) is stuck open.

The part is less than $70 for the Pierburg, but from what I can see, I think I need to drop the rear subframe to get at it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!

This is the LAST thing that's triggering the CEL.

First question is - is that valve normally closed? So smoke should not travel through it when the car is off?

Second question is - how hard is it to replace that valve? It sure looks like a bear...

I believe its completely normal to have smoke coming from that charcoal filter. I recall JRL or someone in an earlier thread mention plugging it to perform a smoke test. Can VIDA activate this valve so you can test it ?

I would use VIDA to do the leak detection pump test. Those have a tendency to fail. And personally if that happened to mine I would just live with the CEL because changing it would certainly raise my blood pressure to unsafe levels.

Do you have Bosch EVAP diagnostic pump in your model year? Black/white piece right to the canister.

When one died in MY05, it threw a "large leak" error code, though it was the pump that was never starting.

The canister shut off valve is normally open, if the p2 emulates the p80s system.

The canister purge valve is normally closed.

Abscate - thanks for the info about the valve being normally open. I'll plug it and try the test again.

VTL - thanks for that info. Yes, I'm getting a 'large leak' error.

Looking at the drawings - in some cases, "number 5" is a solenoid valve. In other cases, it's a pump. I have the valve.

But Abscate's suggestion to plug that filter was the key. Now the REAL leak has been identified, and as in 90% of the cases, it's the J hose. I think I replaced this about 10 years ago. Maybe longer - I bought this in 2002. The hose clamp on the solenoid end is pretty rusty,.so it looks a little dicey to get that off and replace the hose without major surgery.

The split is on the corner, at maybe 2 o'clock as you look at the back side of the carbon filter. I will try to make a long piece of something that I can use to get back there and glob on some RTV to plug the hole. If only my fingers were 14 inches long... I have some 1/2 inch wide, 1/16 thick aluminum here someplace....

If that fails, I'll either try to loosen that clamp or just learn to live with it.

Did I mention that I love my new smoke machine? Should have bought one years ago.

I'll report back later.

VIDA has the test for EVAP pump. Run it. If you see no pressure drop, the pump is dead.

I MacGrubered a piece of aluminum to get around the back side. Hopefully the red RTV schmeared into the crack. I'll find out tomorrow after it cures.

The hose clamp on the valve is pointing towards the right rear wheel. Does anyone know if it's feasible to reach it if I remove that wheel? In other words, to I have any prayer of replacing that hose without dropping the subframe?

It appears that I don't have a pump, only a valve... does that make sense? I find it odd that the drawing shows EITHER a valve OR a pump...

I pulled the wheel. I can see the solenoid end of the J hose. Partially blocked by the hard line that heads to the radiator. I'll never get a socket on that clamp.

But the good news is that if my goobering didn't work I might be able to use a long dowel to smoosh some more RTV in the area...
