Volvo U.S. provided document(s) after you got it here or before entering the country with the car? Was it the one that went to your niece?

Yes, the issue for the 850 is that in Canada we did not have a label under the hood stating it was 50 state compliant. That effectively means the Canadian spec was the same as the US. What my brother did was contact the US Volvo office and they supplied a letter stating the US and Canadian emissions were the same. For the age of the car the emissions seemed to be one of only 2 issues. The other one was the lack of MPH on the speedo, which we overcame wit a complete unit from our friend Erik. I fitted it and had friend who owns a shop write a receipt for install which he was happy to do as he knew I would know better than him how to!

That was the only info we needed. Once it got to CA it had to go through the standard CA smog testing which it passed with no issues.

The advantage of the analogue speedo up to MY98 is it is easy to swap and has no vehicle specific info in it. After that for 99-00 and then later models I am not sure if they can be changed over. Most that come north over the border the owners don't change and use the kph inner speed ring and work in miles for everything else. Some do change it but again I think it is a hardware and software swap which gets expensive. It would be the same going the other way except they have to get the speedo swap to MPH.

I would estimate the swap would be in the region of $1000 CDN with labor to swap the motherboard, program and remove/install.

Get the 850, you can get into ME4.4 ECU coding which is leaps and bounds easier than ME7. Pretty good resources available.

*50 owner never got back to ma and it looks like it is now sold as listing removed. As is the V50. S70 is still available but owner is a challenge to deal with and it appears he believes his time is more valuable than mine.........!

Well stranger things happen I guess. The S70 owner had disappeared from view and then the car appeared on Kijiji our other main sales web-site here, and at $400 less? I contacted him again and now I got a phone number at least this morning!

Weird!

So actually going to see the S70 NA SE this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how good/bad it is. Last S70 NA I went to look at ended in PnP which is where I suggested was best for it! :(

It had been thrashed beyond economic repair even without the rust issues! Good news is the flat lug bolts are now in my garage to be re-purposed for my friends V70 NA winter metal rims and the lower rear spring retainers and a few other parts were removed yesterday for my buddies V70. So it will live in in part!

Well if 00 S70's ran on 4 cylinders then this could be your car! Pictures also are not showing the 2 broken headlamp lenses the jammed open LHR window or the fact the the front 6" of the hood are missing the clearcoat.

Engine check light is on but rookie mistake forgot to take my code reader. If I have time this evening I will try to go back with the code reader and a spare door master switch and see if the window will close.

Also forgot the timing belt was last changed at 112,000km in 2011. Car is now at 260,000km!! EEK! Also being the 2nd belt the water pump is on the schedule too.

I looked over the repair receipts. Story goes the car is the guys dads, but he has moved back to Honduras. Wanted son to ship car but then Covid-19 hit and the cost of shipping went up to $8000. Son has now moved and no longer has room to store car and so is selling it.

The last repair receipt shows overdue trans service, coolant service and possible oil leaks from engine and trans. I had a quick look and can see neither leaking. Only leak noticeable is the oil filler cap.

Went back this evening with a code reader, spare master switch and a couple of tools.

Changing master switch did not close the rear window. Tried a used OE part and a new Switch Doctor and no different. So either a broken wire most likely in the driver's door harness or a bad rear door switch. Those don't usually go bad but can't discount it.

2 Engine codes - P0220 (throttle position sensor) and P0301 (Cylinder 1 misfire).

I dare not drive the car any distance on an 11 year old timing belt so testing the 5 speed auto trans is not possible for any issues. I decided too much of a risk. So I passed on the car.
