Anyone replaced the valve hushers on their 2.3?

Post by June »

Has anyone replaced the valve hushers? Did it make a sound difference? My 1991 740 Turbo has noisy lifters. Nothing audible inside the car, little sound with the hood closed, but noisy with the hood up. Perhaps this is normal? I don't remember my 1989 740 being this loud. I notice the hushers require the camshaft to be removed. Therefore best changed with the belt. My car is still 12K away from the 50K belt change. Thanks, June

Does the noise sound like a clattering or slapping?

Like lots of little ticking sounds all at once. So possibly lots of little slapping sounds at idle. Six or seven of the eight lifters slightly tapping sound, maybe one or two ticking slightly louder. Ticking noise is not stationary or consistent. Ie. A single tick at the same place of the head, or ticking at that location all the time. Sometimes the engine is quieter than others. The engine is running 10w30 GTX. Tried Rislone in one oil change and Lucas in the current. Neither changed anything. June

Sounds like a Sewing machine is valve train.

All your B230s have some piston slap. It does not hurt anything. Jimmy57 laid it out on this page.

These red block engines have discs of various thicknesses to adjust valve clearance. Service interval is every 30,000 miles.

I have the answer. Seafoam did nothing. I added one bottle to 4 quarts of 10w30 GTX. I ran the engine hard for 500 miles with no reduction in sound, nor did the oil get dirty. The ticking actually got louder. Next I added Rislone to 4 quarts of 10w30 GTX. 500 miles of hard driving with no change, oil came out clean. Next I used Lucas to 4 quarts of 10w30 GTX. Drove it hard for 1000 miles with no reduction of noise and oil came out clean. I used new oil filters each time. AC PF53.

I drained the crankcase added 5 quarts of Valvoline 5W30 without changing the filter. Ran the engine 2000 rpm for a couple of minutes, drained it and put a new filter. Did this to get the GTX 10w30 out of the turbo, cooler, and recessions of the head. So 4 quarts of Valvoline 5W30 and one can of Lucas zinc camshaft break-in additive and a AC Delco PF53 filter. The valve train has radically quieted down at 300 miles of hard driving. I will add photos of the bottles. I now hear the piston slap as suggested above. The engine is much happier with 5W30 grade as noticeable on boost gauge. Turbo spools quicker and gauge shows deeper vacuum on deceleration. Engine idles 60% smoother, and with noticeable reduction of turbo lag = quicker acceleration. I did buy a set of ramps and the tools necessary to change the oil. In Arkansas it is nearly impossible to get a car worked on. June

Trying 15W40 per MVS recommendation. Ran 3.5 quarts to flush out the 5W30. Drained, replaced filter, and filled with 15W40. I went with the Chevron Synthetic as the Shell Synthetic is 5W40. My thought being 5W30 and 5W40 is too close in grade. The cold idle is smoother, hot idle about the same. Valve train is noisier like a sewing machine only louder. Again i used the AC Delco PF53. I initially chose this oil filter because it has no bypass valve inside. I watched YouTube videos of the locally available filters being cut open and all others have some form of the valve. Drove her 150 miles today on the 15W40 without issue. I will report further once I run her more miles. I really love owning a 740 once again!!! June
