High Milage Mobil ! ???

Post by AlanS »

My 2006 xc70 has 110k miles. There is some oil loss over the 3000 mile oil change intervals....I use Mobil 1 10-30. Any reason to change to High Milage Oil? Things have been good so far (except for the oil loss - about a quart in the 2000-3000 miles).

Don't change to a different oil as a bandaid is my feeling. My S80 started using .25 of a quart per 3,000 mile during the 2 to 3K portion of the oil change period. That started around 180K. Around 200K went to .50 quart, then at 215K it became. 25 every 500 miles. I never changed from the Redline 5W30 oil, just added when necessary and kept changing it every 3K. It was a turbo seal. Now at 220K no oil used in the 3K oil change duration with 5W30 Synthetic since turbo replacement. June

Your mileage is low. No need for high mileage oil of any kind or ever for that matter. I've never liked Mobil 1 since I began trying it in the mid 90's. It has fast flow, heavy detergent but not robust. As my parents neighbor describes it, has no power when you punch it.

My choice for motor oil is Swepco, Rotella T6, Castrol or Liqui Moly 5W-40. You should see less oil consumption if it is indeed blow by rather than as June mentioned the turbo or potentially another area. Regardless, even if you had other issues consumption should be reduced. Just now I see Rotella is back to more sane pricing as when it was $18 to $21.

You will find your car smoother, quieter, increase in mileage besides less stress on the motor during WOT or when passing.

One quart/liter in 2000 miles is really nominal
Oil use. Steady as she goes with what you are doing.

Why 10w30? I thought the Volvo recommendation for the 2001-2007 was 5w30? I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 every 7,500 miles for 21 years, and don't see any loss of oil. Could the viscosity you are using be part of the problem?

No. I know from years of experience, a 3K oil change does not hurt anything. Last time I checked a replacement 2.9L ran $14,000.00 plus a ton of labor, or $70,000.00+ for a comparable 2022 new Volvo. A few extra oil changes to potentially extend the life of my Volvo seems like a cheaper option. June

Mobil1 0w40 on my two cars. Some guy named Astro on VolvoXC/Bob is the oil guy forums has long made the argument for the grade and done a lot more research than I ever care to so i was convinced to switch from 5w30. I change every 8000km.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I saw the 0W-40 at Costco a couple years back and gave M1 another try. Found Costco's Kirkland motor oil of similar grade a better oil. Used it in several cars for comparison. As a matter of fact Walmart's SuperTech, Costco and Amazon are / were also made by Warren Distribution so even those are better than M1, especially on WOT.
