Correct power steering fluid ATF for 2000 S70 V70 C70?

Post by FireFox31 »

What type of transmission fluid must be used in the power steering system in a 2000 S70 / V70 / C70? Is it Dexron III, JWS 3309, or some other type of ATF?

Is the fluid type different between TRW and SMI racks?

The owner's manual says that steering uses "ATF". Up through 1999, Volvo used the 4-speed automatic which used Dexron III / Mercon. In 2000, they switched to the 5-speed which uses Volvo part # 1161540-8 (its type is not disclosed). Should the 2000 steering use the 4-speed Dex III or 5-speed unknown type?

I have JWS 3309 in my 2000 V70. The rack has a tiny leak during the coldest part of winter and fluid seeps from the hose clamps, including the one on the brand new OEM reservoir. I'm suspicious that 3309 is too thin, thus leaking, so should switch to Dex III. Thanks.

It doesn't really matter as long as you're not mixing ATF and power steering fluid. My 2000 XC had ATF for most of its life, Dex 3 for a while, then Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. After I replaced the PS hoses a couple years back, I switched to using CHF 202 PS fluid. I also have a Magnefine inline filter on my system. Original rack at almost 340K miles.

Most PW fluid is compatible with AT fluid. The best is Swepco but am currently using Havoline. To think Chervon uses Swepco at it's refinery in Richmond CA. The Swepco Rep use to sell $7K worth of products to Chevron and this was back in the early 2000's though the Rep and his dad made a lifetime selling Swepco.

If the leak is from a seal or O-Ring then add ATP AP-205. Have used all those even in my Honda besides mixing  which for some is anathema.

I have been using Maxlifer ATF in my 1999 s70 power steering since I bought it (8 years ago??) and it seems fine.

you can see all the specs it has here:https://www.valvoline.com/en/maxlife-multi-vehicle-atf/ and then click on the Multi vehicle product information sheet.
