2005 XC90 V8 oil cooler

Post by 5ft24 »

Well, with just shy of 167k miles, my oil cooler appears to have failed. Coolant is a creamy milkshake, oil is down a quart and no coolant in the oil. No overheating.
Rather than replace it and flush everything myself, I notice that Volvo has a recall on the oil coolers for this failure. Would mine still be covered and the replacement, coolant, flush etc all be covered?

Looks like chassis (last 6 of VIN) 131042-235892 applicability and seems to not include the S80 (which also shared the V8).

Resolution is indeed replacement of the cooler. I'll guess that you won't get any warranty relief on this given your model year but can't hurt to ask.

Last 6 of VIN is 176206, so I'm in there, but they said it "wasn't applicable" to my vehicle

I've seen a number of posts (here and elsewhere) about oil coolers failing on V8's. Mine is 2005, with 190k miles on it. I am wondering about maybe replacing the oil cooler proactively as preventative maintenance. (I have a desire for long term reliability, and don't want it to fail at an inopportune time, not to mention avoiding having to clean inside the engine after a failure.

Any thoughts on whether this would be worthwhile? Or is the oil cooler failure really rather rare? What do you think?

I would say do it. I wouldn't consider it a rarity since Volvo did issue a bulletin on it. Check online for the cooler... I saw it as low as $260.00 whereas the local dealer wanted $370 for it.
I spent 4 days flushing and cleaning to get all the oil out of the cooling system and have to now replace all the hoses as well. Has not been fun
