I would strongly suggest a 940/940 Turbo as newer and similar to the 740/760. 760 Turbo also has the 4 cylinder engine.

If you want a bit more interesting I would suggest a V90 or S90 depending if you want a wagon or not. They were only made for 2 years? 97/98 but are the best if you assume the last years have any issue resolved.

It all comes down to how long you want to wait to find a good solid car and if you are not too choosy on which one you end up with.

Well at least you now have a plan which gives you options. Your wife may not need a turbo but like I suggested, find a good car and worry less about the spec it comes with. Nice cars are getting harder to find. 240's are now getting silly high prices so the newer square bodied cars have not caught up on their pricing yet!

Good Luck on the search and when you find one let us know!

"Good" is a relative term. I'll be keeping my eyes open, but pickings are few, so it may take a while.....

I should mention that most of these I see have over 400,000km on them. I don't know what the B series engines are good for, either....

I do have a line on a 2001 v70. Non-turbo, 269,000 km. Not ideal, but a decent price. I have not looked at it yet. All I really know about it is the power steering leaks somewhat... I may go and look a it next week.....

Apparently there were a lot of problems with that model year. I'm going to pass on it.

2003 onward are the better FWD versions to go for.

I have read a lot about the 01-02 as being bad cars. They were afflicted with the same bad ETM's as the 99-00 P80 chassis cars. A rebuilt part will give another long life with the Xemodex contactless position sensors. The other 'bad' issue was the transmissions, again same as some of the last year 00 P80 models. The main issue is owners believed Volvo when they said they were 'sealed for life' but nobody told the oil that! Most owners also passed on the later rescinding of the sealed for life and 80,000km flush and naturally the transmissions failed with mostly bad solenoids. That or they took them for a flush at a quick lube place who pressure flushed the trans which promptly failed with moments of leaving their premises.

Passing at this age is possibly a wise decision unless you can find a manual trans.
