95 850 Turbo FAILED EMISSIONS INSPECTION--NEED HELP PLEASE?

Hi Everyone!

I live in the great state of Massachusetts and I failed the car inspection. It was weird because it wasn't until after the inspection that a code came up for an 02 sensor. I'm going to type in what was on the report and hope someone out there will translate it for me. Please remember I am a female and detailed explanations are truly appreciated!!!! Here goes:

NOx: Your vehicle has failed the emissions test for NOx during the drive cycle. Limit is 02.50 and my reading was 02.60.

"Primary systems that affect NOx include mixture control, EGR, ignition and exhaust gas after-treatment, primary feedback sensors (02, MAP/MAF, TPS, RPM and CTS) can be common causes of failure in newer vehicles. In addition, check EGR valve, EGR hose, timing advance and ignition components."

Please let me know if I would be able to take care of any of the above problems myself and also what I should do about this.

Okay, I checked my codes and here's what I got:

A2: 443-Catalytic Converter Efficiency Low
435-Slow Front O2 Sensor

Please explain what these mean?

I checked all my sockets and here are other codes I got and need explained:

A3: 213-No left rear wheel signal on moving off
214-No right rear wheel signal on moving off

A7: 121-Temp sensor interval too short
122-Temp sensor interval too long

The A6 socket does nothing at all. I press the button and the red light does not blink at all. Can I fix this?

I'm hoping someone out there will be kind enough to help me out here. This board has been a blessing to me!!!! There are lots of things I do myself but so much more I don't know about. Since my husband got cancer I'm trying to save some money and also get the info I need if I have to take it to the mechanic. I don't like to go into the shop uninformed. I've done well with all the help you've given me in the past and the mechanics are impressed that I know what I'm talking about. Of course I owe all of you the credit and can't thank you enough for all of your help in the past!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will help with what I can and trust that MIJ, Ozark, JRL and slew of other folks will jump in.
First start by clearing the codes and see which return.Here is assuming these all come back again. I would also make sure that the Throttle body is nice and clean.

The A6 socket does nothing at all. I press the button and the red light does not blink at all. Can I fix this?

Starting with the easy one, you have a combined ECU which uses only one socket for fuel and ignition....which is the A2, therefore no reading will come from the A6 socket.No problem there.

A7: 121-Temp sensor interval too short
122-Temp sensor interval too long

You should check out you temp sensor and thermostat, I would expect that you would have some "surging" if the temp sensor is faulty.

A3: 213-No left rear wheel signal on moving off
214-No right rear wheel signal on moving off

The rear wheels have a sensor which picks up a lot of debris and can give a faulty signal. If the rear wheels are binding you can also get a fault reported.
A service of the rear brakes and or e-brake can solve this.... there is always the possibility that the rear wheel sensors have gone "phut" and will need to be replaced.

A2: 443-Catalytic Converter Efficiency Low
435-Slow Front O2 Sensor

If you take a rubber mallet and give a couple of knocks(not too hard) to the Catalytic converter and you hear loose bits from inside , it is likely that the "cat is damaged and will need to be replaced.
The O2 sensor can either have a bad connection or needs to be replaced, from my understanding .

I think you hit most of the stuff but let me say that emissions testing is only concerned with emissions so if you're wanting to pass, you've got to deal with the 02 sensor picking up a bad reading. My thoughts are that the temperature sensor is just off enough that this is causing more fuel to be injected and you're burning rich- thus a high NOx reading. Like tailor said, change out your thermostat and temp. sensor (or you could possibly clean the connection to the temp. sensor and that's all it is if you're not getting temp. fluctuations) and clean your throttle body and things will probably take care of themselves. Whatever you do- if you want to go to the testing station soon, don't unplug your battery. If you do that, you'll have to drive several hundred miles before your car will actually show "ready."

THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH Tailor and MIJ!!!!! Your EXPERT advice is appreciated more than you could know!!!!! Now I have a plan and will do the cleaning of the throttle body and replace the thermostat. I will clean up the ECT sensor and find out if it needs to be replaced. As far as the 02 sensor, I will take it to the mechanic for this. The state actually requires that any work done after failing inspection be done by a qualified garage. Cleaning the throttle body and replacing the thermostat won't be noticed, I'm sure. The 02 sensor is the obvious problem and I can't do this anyway.

I really cannot thank you guys enough!!!!! I don't think you realize how much your help is valued and appreciated on this board!!!!! Especially by the "ladies"!!!!! Yes, I know there are excellent female mechanics out there but I am definitely not one of them! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for helping me out and please continue to help those of us who don't have the knowledge you have. Again, you don't know how much this is valued!!!!! Thanks MIJ and Tailor for all your help!!!! I did all that you instructed me to do and the car passed inspection with flying colors!!! You saved us tons of money and we truly appreciate it!!!! Since my husband has been sick, it means alot to me to have a forum like this where I can learn how to take care of my car!!! Then, if I can't do it myself, at least I can walk into the garage and talk to the mechanic with knowledge about the problem. It's empowering to be able to do this!!! Garages aren't a females favorite place.
