I apologize if this may seem off-topic, but I am considering the 2005 S40 and would like to hear peoples' experiences with late model Volvos and this model in particular. I know that I should expect more maintenance than a Japanese car, but how does it compare with the Audi A4? I have some experience with Audi and MB, and they predictably require a great deal of maintenance and awareness to avoid serious problems.
I have no experience whatsoever with Volvo but really like the look of the S40 and the performance on offer, not to mention safety. Any insights on what to expect in terms of reliability would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Same as Audi and MB.
That said, the platform for the new S40 is same as Mazda 3-series, meaning it's probably pretty good. The engine and interior/exterior are all Volvo, and the engine is wonderful and bulletproof.
I know reliablility is your question, and I hope I've addressed it a bit, but this will offer some insight on performance comfort etc:

The car is awesome. Best balance of performance, handling, and comfort I've ever owned. This is my fourth Volvo. Just gave my '91 Accord to my son. Cost of ownership is higher with Volvo, but worth it, in my opinion. Comparable to other European cars, from what I hear. Reliability has never been an issue for me, and now I also get to have some fun.
