2015.5 V60 Strange Rumble Noise and Vibration

Post by Anticus »

Hi all,

I bought a 2015.5 V60 Drive-E Premier with 76,000 miles on it. Had the Volvo dealer check it out, and they gave it a clean bill of health. I bought the car and within 2 weeks, I have started to notice a horribly annoying and troubling noise accompanied by vibration coming from underneath the passenger cabin.

I thought it was a bad bearing or a stuck brake caliper at first, since it sounded and felt like a rumble from uneven pavement surface, but it comes from multiple directions at different times. It's a little more common when just starting to move, such as backing out of a parking space, and it lasts for about one second every time it happens. Usually about once every minute or two.

Slightly more common at low speed, and occurs while both stationary (engine running) and moving.

It occurs with A/C and fan on or off, and the only thing that I noticed on a walkaround is that the fuel door was cracked open (the cap was secure) and I just popped it back in to place.

The only thing I can think is maybe a fuel pump failure? Even then, I have no idea why the noise/vibration would sometimes come from the front of the vehicle.

I love this car but I'm sending it back if this sort of problem happens with no warning within two weeks.

I figured it out afterwards. It was the gas cap and the noise was the pressure equalizing after it built up too far.

AutoZone and Advance both sell a compatible cap which fixed the problem immediately.

No clue why that failure seems to happen, but if that's the problem that haunts these vehicles I think it's fine.

If you're experiencing this problem try replacing the evap system charcoal cannister, Volvo part #31338102. In the meantime, keep your tank above 3/4 full as often as possible to help take stress off the fuel pump and lessen your likelihood of being stranded, as eventually it will prevent your engine from getting enough fuel. This problem drove me nuts until they finally figured it out. Apparently it's just now starting to show up on these vehicles as large numbers of them reach 70k plus miles. I suspect consistently running premium will help delay having to deal with this. Symptoms for me included difficult-to-locate light knocking sounds both moving and idle (eventually I determined it was coming from the rear), including after turning off ignition, as well as more pronounced rumbling noises and - my favorite - conspicuous fart sounds. Never could replicate it at the shop but finally one of the service writers knew what it was based on my description.

I have the same issue, driving me nuts! Thought it was the breaks sticking/rubbing noise or rear shocks. Had my girlfriend drive as I stood outside and the "fart" air pressure was coming from the gas cap area, sometimes from the left rear! Inside the car it sounded totally different more rubbing vs air pressure release sound! How hard is it to replace this cannister? If someone can share instructions, I would appreciate ti. On initial look under the car, it looks like a couple hoses and some nuts or screws on the inside bracket? Didn't look like I needed to remove the subframe or whatever those two long arms underneath gas tank...

I replaced the charcoal canister the cylindrical one and the noise of farting or air pressure release from gas cap and rear of vehicle is gone! Simple replacement the hardest part is getting the one 8 mm I believe acre off the top which is in the valley of the frame. Got the part for $170batbcukver city volvo vs $350 at the dealership. If you are having these same symptoms this may be your issue. No cel codes ever came up.

Hi Guys,revanced
Experiencing an odd rumble noise and vibration in my 2015.5 V60. It's becoming a concern as it's affecting the driving experience. Planning to have it checked at the service center soon. Anyone else facing a similar issue? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Volvo S60 T5 2016, Changed the EVAP canister and purge value, still no use. fuel gets cut every gallon when I refuel. The fart noise still exists. Help please. I have already spent about $1000 on this issue. is this just a noise issue or would it affect the vechicle's function later on?
