I have an '04 S60 R. I don't drive it a much because the rear end sounds awful but the steering became progressively worse and when I went to jockey some cars in my driveway the power steering was pretty much non existent. I did put some Lucas power steering fluid in it and drained some fluid out. the fluid I drained out ( with a vacuum pump) was very dark, blackish in fact. There is no whining noise like from low fluid but the system is definitely not functioning correctly. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Volvo PS fluid or Pentosin CHF 202 is the only fluid you should ever use.

Hey Exkodaker
I use any type fluid nothing changes. Sounds like the U joint on the steering shaft is getting tight, about $80. plus labor, seen it plenty with my Volvo fleet.
cheers

I would put the front wheels up and see how the steering feels engine off , make sure the rack isn’t binding.
