Now found the repair part in various forms, even at NAPA!

Wow, NAPA Canada? Can you post their part number? I want to pick one up for when I tackle mine (-25 here today with the windchill, so I suspect it will be a while!).

Last time I looked I could only find it on the Skandix site. I meant to write to suggest you buy it while still in the UK...

Thanks!

Yes, if only I had known!!

This website was not particularly helpful but think it may be in North America:

https://autobahnpartsexpress.com/products/55436002

Then Napa:

https://www.napacanada.com/en/search?te ... referer=v2

The part number they use is the same one the repair shop used on their quote. Obviously check as there is no picture to confirm what it looks like.

Also, see the attached .pdf
Is this a common problem? This is the first time I'm reading about this in 7 years of Volvo ownership. Can this be done without removing the knuckle/axle/etc. ?

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

The answer is yes it can be done without removing the rear knuckle and hub/axle. Need to remove the hardware and then grind down the remaining aluminum for the shoes to sit against and then the new part bolts into 2 existing holes in the knuckle.

Probably you have not heard of this just as I had not or an 18 year Volvo mechanic as it is now a age related issue and depends where you live.

So here is an update on our son's car. It is an 06 XC70 with a similar mileage (close to 190kkm) as my buddies son's car that had the rear parking brakes destroy one side hub when the nub that the parking brake shoes pivot on sheared off.

I decided that as our car has similar mileage and age, I would have a preventative repair done on the rear brakes. I was going to do it myself, but my back is out just now so I took it to the local Volvo dealer who agreed to tackle the repair. We would still pay for the repair but they would get to do the work on it as a learning process as the manager had never heard of the issue.

Well I bought the Skandix parts and also took the new Brembo rotors, Volvo OE parking brake shoes and hardware, as well as a set of Akebono rear pads. They would install these for me as part of the work. Not sure the brakes needed done just yet, but as the parts had been on the shelf in the garage for close to 4 years (at least) and the (at least) 13 year old parts were coming off anyway, it made sense to me to swap in the new parts.

Anyway, they got in there and found the nubs to be totally fine with no corrosion issues which is not what I expected.

They called to ask if we still wanted to go ahead with the repair but after discussion we decided against it and just fit the new brake parts. Now I have a 2 post hoist I can look at this annually and see if there is any degradation requiring the repair to be done.

This is something I would suggest those of us with P2 cars (XC70, V70, S60 and possibly XC90?) carefully check for if you live in areas where salt and/or de-icing agent are used on your roads.
