You need a 'key' on the security packaging to program a fob. If you don't have the key, then the dealer cannot program the fob if I recall. When our transponder stopped in one of our fobs, I fitted a new one but still have to buy a fob to get the key to program them.

Locally we have lock smiths who claim to program Volvo keys for a lot less than the dealer. Never tried them out but maybe you have something similar over that side of the country.

Thanks all, so far. I'll keep you posted...
Cars or at least "newer" Volvos, sure are getting complicated, second only to washing machines, I'd say...

If yagger can program blank transponder chips, you could get one off aliexpress along with a new housing for probably under $20. I’ve replaced 3 fobs because of switchblades that went defective, transferring the chip over carefully like in the below link. but I noticed last time sellers now carry the little glasss chip.

I use this guide https://andrewpeng.net/cars/2006-volvo- ... key-repair

Please update us. I have never gone through such a repair and it would be nice to have this resource in case of emergency!

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

My understanding is you need the serial # for a key to be programmed. Typically you need a new key to get that number for the transponder on a key (unless someone bought a key and kept the box/bag it came in?).

And yes it typically needs to be programmed at the dealer (though a few can do this aftermarket).

You can clone a key that's already working.

Not sure what the deal on the fobs is.
