99 V70. Bigger tyres 16” Wheels.

Post by duckhunt »

Greetings all,
I understand this is a well covered topic and have searched and read mixed reports on the topic.

I have 15” and they are just too small looking on the car.
I have refurbed and painted a set of 16x6.5J Volvo steels.
I understand the Volvo sizing recommends 205/55/R16.
I will likely go for this however after seeing the tyre on other cars it does look a tad thin.
My main concern is a smooth ride, and wondered if anyone has increased the profile with good drivability.
Willtheyfit is a good website and states that with the stock 16 tyres the arch gap loss would be 8.45mm, which seems a small change.
I am happy to hear experiences of tyres sizes.
I am fairly set on Goodyear efficientgrip 2s.

Thanks!

Can the speedo be adjusted for this on a 99?

I’m not sure, I will do a run with a gps to get an idea of that. I don’t anticipate more than 5% or so at 60mph according to the website.
https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?w ... offset2=43

I’ve only read about rubbing at full lock but some do some say they don’t. Depending on size. I want it chunky as possible for the awful roads.

There are sites on line that compare rolling dimensions of tires. You can input standard diameter and then vary an alternate and see the change on speed at various speeds.

You will have to be a geek to even know if the speed can be altered. The speed sensor measures on the reluctor gear wheel on the axle, so I don't think you will easily be able to change the input, you will have to find a way to adapt the signal.

As to various tire sizes. The 16" used to be a 205/50/R16 tire, but due to a lot of (careless) owners complaining of sidewall splitting on their tires Volvo changed the recommended tire sidewall from a 50 to 55. This already throws the speedo out so going bigger sidewall will naturally affect your speedo readings.

I have used this site in the past to compare tires:

Not sure about what your wheels looks like. If the offset is the same on the wheels then we could potentially have the same spec setup though mine has 10mm spacers in the back.

I mentioned that I would consider getting 5mm spacers in the front and 15mm for the back if an opportunity afforded the exercise. After doing a little check today I'm not going to consider it. The 205/55/16 with those rims and 10mm in the back is close enough. Use the side walls and a level. It's actually a little straighter as the side wall on the bottom protrudes a little more when making contact with the ground.

Interesting,
I have decided to go with the standard 205/55/16, I’m sure Volvo knew what they were doing!
Crossclimate 2s after reading lots of positive reviews.
Getting fitted today all being well. Thanks.
