So I had a gearbox clunk when braking, when taking off, when pressing the gas pedal or when I remove my foot from the accelerator. Axle ping I thought. I decided to try and torque the bolt a bit more.
I couldn't - I had no driveshaft bolt. It was not installed and that was the reason for the clunks, sadly this is how I bought it so I never knew. I will be ordering it tomorrow, but what is the current consensus for preventing axle ping when I do install it? Grease? Do I need to remove the driveshaft or push it as far as I can and grease it well? I don't want to accidentally grease the bolt as that changes the clamping load for the same torque value.
Also I am hoping this did not wear out the splines for the CV joint(inner or outer).
Mystery clunk aka axle ping. Tips?

I never had any joy with the OEM bolts despite trying several loctites. Maybe because I have aftermarket shafts, not sure. I bought some XC90 style copy bolts from Poland via eBay, and they seem to have worked so far.

So I did a thing...I bought a replacement part, an outer CV joint with the bolt. Do you guys think I can get away with using this bolt on the original CV joint or do I need to install the new outer CV joint now that I got it as any differences in length and thread will likely cause more issues than it solves?
