‘04 XC 70 - Aftermarket CAT fit issues

Post by E Showell »

So, Ruby Red developed a CAT leak at one of the support stay weld points. The Volvo Cat is NLS, not that I would have ordered one. I got a DEC from Partsgeek, which is Cat and flex pipes and is alleged to be a direct fit replacement. It was not a good fit. Local mechanic spent time heating the flex pipe and bending as well as enlarging the bolt holes on the flange to make it fit. I am betting the Magnaflow ($250 more expensive even after a coupon code) is the better option.

I suspect he didn't build a wooden jig before cutting the old one.

You can also grind off the ill- fitting flanges , and put bear river converter flanges on and weld or band clamp them with putty

Same car. Same leak here. Please post the model/brand of the cat you selected so I don’t make the same mistake. Looking at some of the pictures, I think theres a cataloguing issue as some of the aftermarket cats don’t look anything close to the original with supports, and claim to basically fit any model Volvo 01-07.

I was eyeing this one, it looks to be correct, and a great price. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/114076540656

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

I used the DEC brand cat and flex pipe combo listed on Partsgeek for about $328. You can check the website for the model #.
