Power Steering Pump pulley
Hello, 04 V70, 2.4, my power steering pump is groaning when I turn the wheel, figured I needed a new pump. Easy enough switch out. Ordered a TRW pump from a major online supplier out of Connecticut, got the pump with pulley, pulley is almost 1/2" larger in diameter. Tried mounting it up, but couldn't get the belt on (cause pulley is so big I figured). The online retailer said that's just how they come and that I (???) should switch out the pulley. Yeah that's their solution, I should switch out the pulley. I don't even have a puller. Has anyone purchased a PS pump with the correct (I measured 5 1/8") diameter? Where should I look? Thanks!! Dave

Dave..try seating the belt into the PS pulley and putting the last loop onto the idler instead

Hey Dave.. I had the same issue with my 2004 v70 R.. the power steering pump pulley was smaller on the R than another one I pulled from a 2.5 turbo. I just got the longer belt. Secondly, the whining can be coming from the reservoir.. if it's bubbling while idling.. replace reservoir MDK

MDK- well it only whines when I'm actually turning the wheel. I heard that's the sign of a bad pump. I will look inside the resivour while it's running see if im getting bubbles. D

Here's what causes the fluid to aerate and cause pump noise, the return tube inside the PS reservoir cracks.Dave0304XC wrote: ↑26 Nov 2022, 14:32 MDK- well it only whines when I'm actually turning the wheel. If your PS reservoir is bad and based on my experience I'd recommend buying a Volvo genuine part or Vaico brand part (FCP EURO and RockAuto have them), the other aftermarket reservoirs I've purchased had a short lifespan.

Wow! That's amazing. Would NEVER have thought a failure like that could happen. But, my V will be 19 years old in 2023, and plastics do break down. D

Thats why any model below 2005 I recommend upgrading to the 2005+ reservoir style. Did it on both my p2’s. Easy swap out

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.
