1999 v70xc Fuel pump won’t come on with key

Post by KiwiWandering »

I bought this car with a blown head gasket. I just finished all the work and was trying to start the car and it wouldn’t start. When I turn the key I cannot hear the fuel pump come on. I checked the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and there is no pressure there. The fuel pump had just been replaced right before I bought the car and had been driven till the head gasket blew. I pulled the relay and put a jumper on pins 87 and 15. Still no fuel pump. Then I supplied power to pin 87(?) and the fuel pump came on. Fuel sprayed out of the Schrader valve. So the fuel pump is good.

My question is, did I forget to plug something in when I did the head gasket? What would cause the jumper wire to not work for making the fuel pump come on? Or is there something else? A fuse maybe? Does changing FOB batteries have anything to do with it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes...there is a fuse for fuel pump.

Check your fuse box.

Also check the fuel relay is not an issue. There are plenty of threads recently on making a jumper wire to test this.

Finally try the simple stuff first like check the security system has not kicked in and turn the key in the drivers' door lock to open and close the locks 2-3 times and try to start again.

I have now seen your post in the wrong thread for P2 chassis cars and Abscates reply, followed by yours.

If the relay jumper does not work and the fuse replacement and door lock don't work then you have the dreaded fuel pump failure. If that is the case then be ready for a whole lot of pain. Abscate detailed his pump replacement on his S70 AWD. Biggest issue is fuel pimps from Walbro (their direct replacement) and Volvo are NLA for AWD P80's. Abscate did find a work around.
