Yeah it's amazing how things changed over the years. Quantum technology will be the next boom im sure. Sensors, etc. There is some disagreement over quantum computers though as to when a big one will be available and what kinds of problems it will be able to handle.

I think we are going to see Photonics replace Electronics.

Quantum physics is the driving force behind all the advances in Electronics and Photonics. Without it we would be nowhere close to where we are today.

I think the first "photonics will replace electronics" article I read was in the early 90's. It's kind of always off on the horizon like fusion power.

Ha ha, that's funny.

As you probably know, the original intent of Schrödinger's cat in the box example was to show how absurd the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics was. He wasnt saying that's the way it really is.
Unfortunately i dont think it's a settled argument yet though if it is real or not. There are still things that cant be explained in classical terms.

So we are stuck in a superposition of both believing it and not believing it

But seriously could reality really be that way ... that there is something about it that can not be determined exactly. We are essentially asking a question that mathematics does not like to allow ... that something can be part of the set that it actually is to begin with, or put another way, if there is something and that something contains other elements, can that something be one of those elements as well as it being the whole. That may be the bottom line argument and i dont think it is allowed nor make any sense to let something contain itself ... the container should be different than the objects it contains.
When we talk about 'reality' being 'real' that is the problem we run into, i think. We have this 'interpretation' (there's that word again) of reality to begin with, so how can we ask if it is real if we already defined it in some way. We may end up having to put up with two interpretations of reality, again as absurd as that may seem. One classical and one quantum. As a civilization we started out with everything classical and we have so much experience with that we believe it to be absolutely true, so we try to stick everything into that 'box' and if it doesnt work we have no idea what to do next.

Now back to the 1 for 1 rule...
I was looking at some meters too (i see one interesting one in this thread now). The ones i was looking at where the bluetooth type that you connect right to your battery and see the results on your cell phone. I like that idea, but what i dont like is i am seeing complaints that the communication distance is much shorter than they advertise. The ads say 10 meters or something but a lot of the reviews say just 8 feet or so. I think a new thread on this would be good.

No Bluetooth

It connects to ODBII or directly to the battery depending on the Test.

Its inexpensive ~$90 and it has a lot of capability

But it isn't fancy.

It was the 90s when I first seen a photonics device. It was a replacement for the gyroscope used in aircraft. They shrunk the function of the gyroscope down to a chip about the size of a computer CPU. It works by measuring the Interference between two parallel circular light beams caused by the difference in gravity from one side of the chip to the other side when you tilt the chip.

China has started construction of a Photonics chip manufacturing plant. Expected to be completed in 2023. Processing speeds are 1000 times faster then electronics chips.

Sounds pretty good. What i was looking for was a wireless (one way or another) that could transmit the car battery voltage to my phone or perhaps even a dedicated receiver. I would accept bluetooth but i hear too many complaints about those type.
I have a blinking LED type voltmeter i havent hooked up to my car yet (used if for several years on my old Hyundai) but i wanted to avoid that this time. I'd put up with almost anything but it has to work and it has to be reliable. Unfortunately i cant use a wired unit, which would be great if i could, because of where i have to park day and night.

That's very interesting i have read some on photonics but not that much yet because i was waiting for something to appear on the market that i could afford and buy and use. Sometimes it takes years for something to come to market.
The chip plant sounds really interesting and it figures the Chinese are going to beat us to it so we will be buying our motherboard from them forever just like now

1000 times faster takes us well into the terahertz. That sounds nice i was so bored with the roughly 5GHz limit. Some have pushed their mainstream cores up to 7GHz but that's still not enough. When i got my first computer it was 4MHz (Z80 CPU you might know) and from that time there has been a relatively steady increase in CPU speed which kept it exciting. Some years ago it came to an almost dead end with increases in the small percentile. Boo to that We need that 1000 times factor to make things exciting again.
