Up to a few months ago my 740 still had it's complete original factory installed exhaust system. It developed a rattle which was the front muffler. A local shop welded a piece of pipe in it's place. Well lately it became loud at interstate speed and fumes when parked, idling with ac on.
Here in NW Arkansas Volvo cars are rare. Needless to say parts aren't at any local store. My options were let someone engineer something like most old Volvo's pictured online. I found the Starla replacement parts on FCP Euro. Surprisingly the Starla system arrived as a good quality replacement for the factory parts. My car runs just as quiet as the factory system did. Unfortunately the factory cat was rotting from the inside out. So needless to say it's gone now, yet the sound at the tailpipe is unchanged with the new cat back Starla system in place. I can 100% recommend the Starla front and rear mufflers, tailpipe, and over axle pipe as direct replacements for the factory system. Note FCP list the over the axle pipe for wagon but might not fit the sedan. It fit my 1991 sedan perfectly. June

When it finally rusts out , probably 5-7 years in the South, you can have someone cut it up into pieces to fit into a 1 cubic foot box, then ship it back to FCP for credit.
Shops cut up stiff for free just for the fun.

Why cut it up??? It is clamped together just like the factory system was. If the clamps were loosened, Wouldn't it come back apart?
More importantly Abscate, are you suggesting Starla equipment is poor quality? The original system took 32 years to rot from the inside out. Hopefully it outlasts me! June

I’m running Starlas on two v70s right now. I think Evan reported they last 4-5 years up here in Wet NY/NJ so you should get double that in the warmer climates without road salt
I hope you have many Starla mufflers left !!
Cutting them up is for return for warranty replacement.

You are killing me, June.
Every part you buy from FCP is replacement warranty for as long as you own vehicle.
When the muffler goes, you buy a new one, ship the old back in pieces, and they refund you your purchase price of the original.

I was curious if you replaced the catalytic converter, too? If no cat, where does the O2 sensor go? I don't see a catalytic converter listed anymore at FCP (at least for a 94 940). I have a Starla muffler and piping that is holding up fine and a distressed original cat. The body of the cat is okay but the connection points on both ends (especially where is connects to the downpipes are rusted and weakened and i'm not sure they can be welded.

On my 91 740 the oxygen sensor is in the pipe just after the exhaust manifold so it wasn't a issue. The cat is gone now. I would rather it was still there. A direct fit was no longer available for my car either. The muffler shop can weld a (what I believe to be called a bung) for the oxygen sensor on any piece of pipe. I've used my particular exhaust shop a couple of times on this car. As always I tip anyone who works on my cars. So the shop trusted me enough to remove it for a test pipe withoutme asking. Here in Arkansas there is no testing. I understand pretty much 99% of the universal fit cats are junk. At least according to the shop. My reading posts here over the years confirmed it to me. June
