2009 s60 2.5t not getting fuel

OK. Long story short - driving from Maine to PA on 12/24, got to halfway in Waterbury on I-84 and the car died. Started gagging like it wasn't getting fuel then cut out. Pushed it off road, got towed by AAA to Firestone. Describe symptoms, he says he can fix it but not until after weekend. I get a rental an continue on my way.
Wednesday I get call it's fixed. He has replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter. I drive up, turn in rental, pay for repair, go. Car reeks of gas.
Heading back to PA. I get about 50 miles down I-84 and the same problem comes back. I manage to limp along another 10 or 20 miles and get off the interstate and pull into a gas station. Where I spend the next 2 days and nights until I can get another rental and find a mechanic. Waterbury Firestone won't talk to me. At the station I meet a guy driving a 98 S70 who says he has 350k on it, refers me to Swedish Motors in Poughkeepsie, saying he's tried all the local mechanics and they're the only ones he'll use.
Ultimately I get the car towed to Swedish Motors and drive myself back to Maine with a rental but I'll have to go back one way or another.
Symptoms:
-runs ok just cruising or going downhill. especially when trying to climb a hill or step on the gas for quick acceleration the car it starts gagging and sputtering, then it will sometimes cut out. Drop it into neutral and it starts right away.
I have no idea what is wrong beyond the fuel pump. I'm open to ideas.
Car currently has 150k on it.

I would first see what model and brand of fuel pump was installed on the invoice from Firestone. Bosch only on these vehicles. I believe on some models there's a common mistake where you can pinch one of the feeder tubes on installation and it causes the car to stall. Your car should have ventilated the gas out from the replacement. I wonder if they didn't seal the retainer lid on completely.

In my opinion Waterbury Firestone should have paid for a tow back to the shop and at the very minimum diagnosed it. I would definitely be on the phone with corporate at this point, as that service is just simply unacceptable.

The issue itself could be elsewhere. I have heard of contaminated fuel, dirty fuel tanks, plugged injectors, etc. many different issues that can result in poor fuel delivery. I would also be plugging in VIDA to see if anything else is screaming at me as an issue, throttle body, vacuum leaks, etc.

Lots of possibilities here, please post back once it gets narrowed down. 09 is a good year so I hope that once this is resolved you should have more trouble-free years.

Fuel pump relay?

I would think PEM possibly on this model. Both my 04s are just relay-driven but I always forget about the PEM issues of the later models.

I'm not inclined to think fuel pump relay. I had that fail on my 850 and, when it did the car just quit. This is different. If I want to go up a hill or need to tromp on the gas to get extra acceleration - i.e., putting a load on the engine - the car acts like it's gagging for lack of fuel.

I’d question the brand of fuel pump too. Fuel filter is pretty straightforward, smell of gas indicates they did likely change the pump. If it is the pump it should be covered under parts warranty.

Probably no relay on a 2009 like a traditional system. Most modern fuel delivery is electronically controlled with modulated waveforms, like the P2 CEM and PEM system

Is a 2009 S60 a P2 or P3 chassis?

I don’t know the P3 chassis well enough to comment more.

Yeah abscate.. the 2009 S60 2.5 turbo is a the last P2.. I've been able to pull parts of off them at the scrap yard and install them on my 2007 v70.. though I'm sure not everything is compatible..MDK

Try disconnecting the MAF and see if it then runs. If nothing else you have eliminated another possibility for rough running/stalling issues.
