What the hell could be going on with this thing?
It started on 01/02/2023 just fine. Today i went out about the same time of day and it would not start even after several attempts.
It did basically what it did before, almost starts, but then doesnt actually start. Sounds like it will start, then does not. So it fires ok for a few revolutions, then shuts down.

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

You need to split your path of diagnostic tree into either ignition or fuel issue.
The simplest way to do this is with starter fluid , a 3 second shot into the throttle body. If it Vrooooms suddenly? It’s a fuel issue.
If not, an ignition issue

.
For the ignition, turn the key to start and if it does not and stops leave it in the II position. Take a long jumper wire and touch the battery and the positive post on the starter and see if will continue to crank and start.

I have had same problem with my 98 S70 cranks, fires, and dies .I have heard it could be a Coolant Temp Sensor issue in cold weather >it starts fine in higher temps

The Kat is doing this to me right now. 1999 s70
You can check the ECT against the resistance chart to see if it matches. It has to be really close. Those charts are in this forum
Use a Volvo part here. No aftermarket.
For you -1998 plonkers here is some UK data

Hi,
Where is the throttle body on this car everything looks sealed.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

There's also a vacuum tree on the intake you could shoot some in, without having to mess with opening the throttle.
I'm also going to suggest (re)checking the ECT sensor and connector. I had a bad one that really gave me fits when it was cold. It ran marginally bad when it was cool, but when it got cold, it wouldn't start, and was unhappy with any attempts to make it start.

Yes thanks, but it's all sealed up. I'd have to remove that big accordion tube.

Ok i guess that ECT will have to be checked again at some point. Just had it replaced about a year ago.Chuck W wrote: ↑07 Jan 2023, 06:40 There's also a vacuum tree on the intake you could shoot some in, without having to mess with opening the throttle.

You mean shoot some in where the air filter is?
