2004 xc90 with the 2.5 motor. Fixing an exhaust leak where the turbo and cat meet (installing a new gasket), I broke two of the studs joining the two pieces. Both studs broke inside the threaded hole on the turbo. My plan is to drill out the studs in place and install a thread repair kit. I'll first try drilling out the studs with a left hand drill bit but expect I will need to do the thread report.
Two questions:
1. One of the posts I read here on the forum recommends removing the turbo to do the thread repair. The idea being the thread repair will be easier on a bench. I agree with that but my concern is that I end up breaking the studs holding the turbo engine and find myself in a worse place than I am now. Do you agree I should drill out the studs with the turbo installed?
2. Which end of the stud goes into the turbo - the shorter or the longer thread? Someone else had done some work to the car and the stud install was not uniform. One of the studs had the longer side in the turbo and two of the studs has the shorter side in the turbo. I just want to install the two new studs correctly.
Thank you!
2004 XC90 - Broken Turbo Exhaust Studs to Cat
Trying to work to drill out the threads in place is not going well and I am planning on pulling out the turbo. I have the instructions from Volvo which say to remove the drive shaft and the bevel gear which I would rather not do.
Are there any good instructions on the removal of the turbo from a 2.5 XC90?
thanks
