I was also going to guess bumper bracket -- that's the worst rusty thing I can remember pulling off my '97, followed by the clamps that hold the fuel filler neck to the gas tank.
Could it be a heat shield somewhere underneath the car?

This one is more about toasted old brittle plastic than iron oxide, but I offer it up to the group... can you name the sensor that this connector is attached to?

I'll take the first guess. It looks like it has either been cooked or near oil. Initially I thought it might be the ECT plug by the power steering pump, but it is not that shape. It's not a block heater either as again different configuration of pins. Nope not a clue. Hate to be stumped but can't think what it could be.

You’re in the right area, getting warm… Want to let a couple other people guess before giving a clue.

You got it! It's from the original camshaft position sensor on my '97 855 GLT. I replaced it a couple years ago -- that's what ~20 years of heat and use did to the plastic.

Ouch and well done abscate! I have not had to change on in a long time (fortunately) but that is why it looked familiar but I would never have remembered!

I've seen two like that. I've always wondered why they didn't use the standard black plastic JPT connector there.
