07 V70 Side light bulb out remove bumper???

Post by OliPhant »

Hello All,
07 V70 112K. Front passenger-side (US) “side light” bulb is out. Dealer informed me it’s necessary to remove bumper to replace bulb. :o Seriously??? Anyone else encounter this? Thanks.

Well, that is what the book says lol. You don't have to follow the book.

I went through this recently and posted the trick in the thread below.

Thanks for confirming bumper removal. Do you happen to know if a blown side light bulb triggers “bulb failure position light”? I have that; not sure if it’s related to side light bulb, and would love to make it disappear.

Yes, the side bulb failure would trigger the light.
Check it yourself...just walk around the car.

Another way to check is next time you go to strip mall, coffee shop with glass etc, park the car and check all lights w/o the need to get out of the car.

The bulb failure light for the marker lights does not trigger the warning on our 06 XC70. Nor the one on the front (we have the Xenon headlight units). I had to take the bumper off to do this as my hands were too big to get into those tight spaces, particularly on the RHS outer marker. What I did find (after I broke the long plastic 'flag' tab for undoing and removing that bulb, is that it is the only one which you rotate CW to remove it. All the others in both lights go the opposite way.

I took the opportunity to replace ll the missing and wrong fittings the insurance repair shop used on the bumper when it was replaced. I also just replaced all the bulbs with exception of the headlight ones as they were much more accessible with the headlights removed.

Not sure on the 04 (do they have the glass lenses still in 04?), but on the 06 there is an adjuster plastic tube that runs down behind the LH headlight blocking removal of the inner marker light. Advice is to remove it (as Volvo mechanic suggested) or remove the whole headlight to work on it.

Good luck!

Neil.

Hi scot850. So if I am understanding… a blown side “marker” light bulb will not trigger the “bulb failure position light” message in your 06 XC70? I’ve heard the same elsewhere so I value the confirmation. Also good to hear about the bumper removal; confirming what the dealer told me. Thanks.

As cn90 says, you don't have to remove the bumper, but for those of us with large hands and arthritis in their fingers it made the job a lot easier, and in my case I had to remove the headlight to replace the marker as I broke the 'flag' for the RH outer marker trying to remove it by turning it CCW as the only one that turns CW.

I also wanted to polish the plastic lenses which is easier done the bumper off.

I did not see any bulb warning lights for these, but then it is my son's car and I don't drive it but he never mentioned it and I saw no warnings for them. Only knew they were out after a visit to the dealer and they pointed them out to me. So, am I 100% sure the warning light does not come on I would have to say no.

Front bumper removal+installation is maybe 10 minutes on P2 cars.
