2004 C70 cross brace removal

Post by scot850 »

Some one (I think it was foggy) mentioned if I had pulled the cross brace on the 04 C70 I pulled the audio amp for. To be honest I forgot they exist and have never seen one. I may return to retrieve it if it is still there later this week. Can anyone tell me what it looks like and what I will need to remove it?

Thanks.

No one removed/fitted one of these? Trying to figure out what tools I may need assuming junkyard car still has this.

Thanks,

Neil.

You mean the big V-shaped chassis brace one under the middle?
Image

The verts have a big one between the middle of the car to the rear SF mounts and a smaller one on the SF itself.

You need a 15mm and an 18mm to get the front mounts loose(2 big bolts and 6 smaller ones) and a 12 or 13mm for the rear bolts (4).
Save all of the hardware, as the front mounting bolts are all longer than the non-vert P80 ones.

The smaller V brace under the SF is held on by 5 12 or 13mm headed bolts. The threaded bosses for those are built into the SF, but you can probably retrofit something to a regular SF to mount one. I have in the garage, but haven't gotten around to mounting it yet.

Are you talking about the bar that goes across the top of the engine bay? I was in a pick-a-part yesterday and at least that C70 had one and it just unbolts with four bolts from the top. Should fit an S70, 850 as well.
Looking for a V90 to be my next Volvo, at the very least a T5.

2017 XC90 Inscription - My best Volvo by far, but Ex-wife departed & I had to sell. 😕
2001 S80 T6 - rebuilt trans, head gasket, fixed & sold
1997 V70 - kid car, sold
1996 850 GLT - found under bridge, 2 year refurb project, commuter car, kid car, T-Boned - SIPS saved passenger. Totaled.
1997 VW GTI VR6 - exceedingly fast.
1971 VW Type II/231 - it was pointed out by management that the children would be killed in it.

Thanks Chuck, you are a star!

I don't plan to use it, but I know the go-faster crowd like the upgrade and I hate to see it get scrapped if it is still there and someone else can get the use of it. Knew about what you show in your picture and the 2 other bars at the front. did not know about the rear.

I will take my impact gun and hopefully it will make it a quick job.

Hi Oly850. Not the strut brace but the chassis brace that Chuck shows in his picture above. I have an OE brace on my car already and no plans for any other stuff going on. This is a rescue for anyone else that can use it. Just like the roof rails I liberated recently from the junkyard and ended up in Taiwan as they were not available there! New owner is thrilled with them.

There isn't a factory "rear" brace on these. That big V brace sits pretty much under the middle of the car. The rear of it replaces where the small factory brace is under the exhaust. The big SF bolts are probably the ones that will give you hell getting them loose, but my 2' breaker bar usually does the trick. Everything else should be gravy.

The rear of the SF will drop slightly when all of the rear mounting bolts are removed, but it's not going to go anywhere.

Thanks Chuck. I'll take my long breaker bar as well as my impact. The impact is supposedly good to over 600 ft/lb so should hope that will help the bad shoulder!

Shouldn't it be 6 bolts? If it's the Volvo OE unit how much do you think they want for it? It does fit the S70 & 850 per FCP.

Be sure to keep those bolts as they are longer. I have one also waiting for installation.
