My method for spare wheel refurb...

The Columba wheels on the 850 had been powder coated before I bought the car. The spare is still original and the outside is still in good condition, however the inside has suffered from salt getting in and causing damage to the aluminium so it required tidy up. As it's only the spare wheel I decided rather than go down the route of powder coating I would paint the inside (inside rim was originally painted when new and not powder coated) and the outside is still presentable. Some serious rubbing with 60 grade sandpaper removed the rough and I finished off with some emery cloth. Etch primed and some grey primer then a couple of coats of clear lacquer before applying a coat of wax.

Wow, a spare wheel that uses an aluminum rim? Mine is steel which is typical in the US and I would have assumed worldwide for all/most manufacturers.

My 91 740 also has a matching aluminum wheel as a spare. Perhaps it was optional equipment? June

The spare wheel well in rear wheel drive Volvos used to have full sized spares with a steel wheel and tire. When Volvo went to the P80 and FWD they went to the smaller donut spare, but you can usually fir a full sized wheel and ire as you can see.
