The 850 petrol engines never came with a sump splash guard although the diesel engines were all fitted with them. This got me thinking that having one installed might be a good way to help keep the engine bay cleaner and after a bit of searching I found the they were still available direct from Volvo. I was speaking to a fellow P80 enthusiast and he told me he had one sitting on a shelf in his garage that was surplus to requirements and we came to an agreement on a price.
There are two tabs welded onto the subframe for holding the cover in place at the centre but there are no holes at the front of the subframe for fittings therefore 3 holes need to be drilled to allow bolts to secure the front edge.
I didn't want to drill three holes large enough to accommodate rivnuts so I decided to use self tapping hex screws which kept the hole diameter to a minimum

I'm guessing they were fitted on the diesels to help keep the heat in. Not sure what other benefits/downsides they might have on a gas engine. Will probably slightly improve aerodynamics and fuel economy. I'd sprits some rust preventer into those new holes if you live it one of those salty climates.

Very nice. I don't even have the front cover/shield on my 850, and I don't think the S70 has one either.

Maybe it could make the engine run hotter in hot climates as air does not get around the oil pan as easily. On a 99- with the pan oil cooler it would restrict the amount of air that can get to it. On the -98 with the engine oil cooler (turbo engines) in the radiator that would be less of an issue, but again less cool air gets to the turbo area so your ABS module will get cooked more.
It's a kind of 'damned if you do, damned if you don't', issue.
I really would like to use one in the winter as it would help keep the turbo engine warmer and help them to heat up quicker. But as we put the R away for the winter it is a moot point. In summer I would leave it off.
Neil.

Agreed.
In my part of the world, I want as much air flowing around as possible, dust be damned.

Got to love Amazon. What a PITA! If I click on the link or even copy the link it takes me to Amazon.ca which does not carry the part. If I access Amazon.com and enter the link. it takes me to Amazon.ca!?
Finally got there by using the Amazon.com website and manually entering the MTC-VP345-9135445 info. The it says there is an issue abut still allows you to add it to your cart??
Thanks for letting us know the part exists 454cid!

Are these shields bolted on from Volvo? I was thinking those push pin retainers might work. If bolts, what size?
